Help making a decision to buy
Hi all, new here, new to LR4.
found one, 2016 6 HSE, great condition, 28k miles $35k.
unfortunately the vehicle has no and I mean ZERO maintenance history, last time it saw a dealership was the delivery inspection. One recall that hasn’t been taken care of (fuel stuff), but no codes or faults. Dealership is offering 30 days 2000 miles bring it back no problem. Then a service plan that covers basically all else except the wear and tear stuff.
car runs and operates fine, no leaks, knocks, suspension is fine, auto start/stop fuel conservation system doesn’t work.
Any thoughts ? Ideas?
thanks in advance to all that chime in.

Auto stop/start is a function of BMS and correct healthy batteries (there are 2, 12v agm batteries). There is no reason for it not working… especially from a dealer.
Change ALL the fluids now.
Anyone can clear codes. ‘Will they come back’, is the question. So I’m happy for you you have a warranty in writing.
And that engine should purr, not rattle.
If you are new to these, know what you are getting into:
Repairs are expensive
A very heavy vehicle and therefore brakes, bushings, tires, fuel are commodity items.
And change that oil every 5000! And keep up with the brake and coolant changes as well.

28k is really low miles. these were sold with 15k service intervals as i recall. so, thats not even two services that you might see if they were taking it to the dealer. If the truck otherwise looks well cared for, I’d take a chance on it.
I can’t really think of specific things to look at in a car with that few miles. Obviously, one owner is great. You might check for prior owners/registration in other states (not sure where you are at). Lots of cars are traded at auction by dealers, but not necessarily a red flag, but I always feel better if the car didn’t arrive at the dealer through an auction. You can look in the corners of the engine bay to see if there is much dirt/sand - possible signs of off-roading. Missing skid plates, missing side steps, 3rd party 18” wheels - all signs of offroading because these items are usually changed out for that purpose. Again - car was made to off-road, so a little of that is fine - and with so few miles, I doubt there would be much wear. Upper control arm bushings/sway arm bushings should be fine at that mileage, but you’ll feel a clunk going over bumps if its not. These are probably wear items not covered by warranty. If you can figure out if it has been kept garaged by the prior owner, rather than outside, that’s a huge plus. Not sure how to tell - any fading pealing paint will tell you, but that’s not likely on a car of this age.
You will need to do the coolant crossover replacements sooner rather than later. I doubt it’s been done at that mileage. Mine were degraded at 55K, but it could be an age rather than miles item. I’d get that taken care of. You can read about it all over the forums. If you are not doing it yourself, factor in about $3000 for that item.
Personally, I wouldn’t worry about the auto start/stop. I bought mine used and it’s never worked - to my delight. I think it’s a faulty part, but doesn’t affect anything else. I had to change the start/stop battery once just to get the warning light to turn off, but purposefully did not reset the BMU for fear that the start/stop might start working again.
Also - if it matters to you - be aware that the cars without the HD package don’t have locking rear diff and also don’t have low range. Lots of people don’t realize there is no low range. I believe the central diff also is a little different from the HD package. HD has a true locking central, whereas the non-HD has more of a limited slip torson type diff to my understanding. Perfectly fine for most things, but if you really want to off-road, the HD package is something to look for.
They are expensive to fix if you don’t like to work on them yourself - so heed that warning that was given by another poster. But, great cars in my opinion otherwise. I’d have it checked by a mechanic during your 30 day/2000 mile period.

Thanks Bud, the dealer doesn’t have specific info on previous owners, did go through auction between owners.
no HD package.
original wheels
actually all original, only things missing are the original headrest TVs. Just the covers are there. I personally don’t care.
but, the fact that is so pricey to work/maintain these vehicles is making me question the purchase to have my first overlander.
thanks again.
the car is with Carmax now, that’s the dealer.

Well, went to the drive appointment, vehicle looked great, but I didn’t buy it, hopefully it’s a great buy for some with experience w/these cars, I brought my code reader and still had active codes, small vibration decelerating from 40mph thru 30-25 mph. Probably nothing but I don’t know enough to make a call. Steering was “heavier than my f250” stiffer I don’t know how to describe it, hard to turn, like the whole front end weights 5000 lbs.
Carmax “master mechanic” worked on installing a new secondary batt, but left all plastic engine covers loose, plus all the computer codes remain. , I lost confidence, I’m sure I’m overthinking it, but 35+k isn’t small change for me. I hope someone with the cash and knowledge gets a hold of this one and enjoys it. Only 29k miles.
thanks to all that commented and pointed out all the kinks .
