LR3, LR4, Range Rover Sport Transmission Fluid - Rock Oil?
I was looking at a transmission service kit for our 2010 Range Rover Sport. Lucky8 has a kit with the new two-piece pan and filter, plug sleeve, screws, gasket and 7 quarts of transmission fluid. They also include free shipping. Lucky8 said the the fluid is Rock Oil 6 HP. I am not familiar with Rock Oil (individual liters are $30 each). Atlantic British has a similar kit but they offer the the AF Lifeguard Transmission Fluid. The Lucky8 kit delivered is $246. The Atlantic British kit is $309, with shipping added is $332. FCP Euro carries the ZF Lifeguard ATF but they don't carry the two-piece pan and filter set.
Has anyone used the Lucky8 kit with the Rock Oil ATF? Is it worth saving $80? Recommendations. Thanks Phil

Success, kind of......I ordered the replacement pan, seal and filter from Atlantic British. It was around $150. I ordered 10 quarts of ZR transmission fluid from FCP Euro, roughly $10 per quart. The job requires around 6-7 quarts, but I thought out of caution, I would order a couple of extra. I finally decided to tackle the job after have the parts sitting in my garage for the last two years. I have a 2010 Range Rover Sport HSE with 128k miles. I got the truck up on front ramps. I was able to get the bolts for the OEM plastic pan off without removing the cross members or lifting the transfer case, in hindsight, it would have been easier to lift the transfer case. Access for half of the bolts was easy, the ones above the cross members was a royal pain. I ended up using a small ratchet with a torx bit. The pan dropped about an inch or so, just enough room to get to the filter neck with a hacksaw. I used a flashlight and mirror to make sure I was cutting the correct part. Once cut, I was able to turn the pan 90 degrees and drop it out. Fluid was relatively clean, My vehicle did not have a heat shield on the transmission pan, made me think that the transmission had been serviced in the past, I got it with 56k miles on it. Installing the new pan was relatively easy except for two thing, the front middle bolt thread on the block was cross-threaded. Thankfully, I had a die kit and was able to clean out the threads. It was the last bolt that I was installing and I ended up having to remove all of the other bolts and drop the pan to clean out the treads......Installing the new allen-head bolts was a pain, I did not have a small bit and ended up having to use a regular allen wrench on the bolts above the cross members. It took forever. To fill the fluid, I used a garden sprayer my neighbor had modified with a tube on the end. He said it was around $8 at Home Depot. (smaller size, it holds around 4 plus quarts). It worked well, much easier that pumping with a hand pump. After warming it up and running through the gears it was time to reinstall the fill plug (always make sure it can be removed before draining the pan....). It is to the side of the catalytic converter, which is hot, well the plug dropped, never to be seen again. I looked for hours, I have no idea what happened to it. It fell somewhere under the fill hole and the cross-member. I ordered a new fill plug today from FCP Euro, around $6. The local Land Rover dealer wanted $39 and two days to get here. (San Diego Land Rover is insanely expensive, they just about double the MSRP on all of their parts). So for now, waiting on the US Postal Service to complete the job. I only hope that I don't have any leaks. A three hour job ended up taking 7-8 hours, most of which was spent searching for the drain plug, which I never did find. I would order an extra just in case, it will save you if your's drops and gets lost. Good luck, I will follow up when the new fill plug arrives and is installed. By the way, there are some great youtube videos on the procedure, one by Atlantic British and one by Waffle Square were very helpful. Phil
Could be. I just ordered the ZF fluid from FCP Euro. The replacement fill plug arrived in the mail yesterday. I will very carefully go through the fill process and try to install the plug without dropping it........stay tuned. (ps while the Rover was out of commission, I have had to use one of our other vehicles. We had to drive up to Orange County yesterday for a wedding. We took my wife's Jaguar F-Pace. It is a fun vehicle for driving around town, but it is not a fun road car. I felt like my filling were going to fall out by the time we got home last night. It rides so harsh, it really isn't too enjoyable. Although she likes it so, we keep it........) Phil
Success, the new fill plug arrived from FCP Euro. I went through the fill procedures one more time, added about another 2 plus quarts of fluid and installed the fill plug! I used some blue tape to make sure the plug was very securely connected to the allen socket. Did a test lap and all is good. I will reset the transmission adaptations today and drive conservatively for the next couple of weeks. I still never found the lost fill plug. Overall, the process was a 5 on a 1 to 10 scale. I would order an extra fill plug, just in case. I would also order a couple of extra quarts of transmission fluid, again, just in case. (On another note, I did notice oil seeping from my front right shock, it never ends.......). Phil
