I'm coming from the world of Discovery 2 and we are paranoid about engine temps. Now that I'm in this LR4 (totally different world) I'm wondering if the temperature gauge is variable or is it just a dummy light like the D2.

In the D2 there where 3 positions: cold, normal, you are overheating, and you're going to need head gaskets.

My LR4 is always smack in the middle when driving around. Is it just a dummy light?

 

ive never actually heard anyone call it this, my understanding isnt it works sporadically - plenty of people have overheated with no warning from the car and no meaningful movement from that gauge.
