Default May be buying an LR4

Hi all,

I'm looking at a 2015 LR4 LUX with 99k miles (no hd). I took it to the dealer and had a ppi done. Only 2 things came back, front air shocks are rusting and will need replacing soon, and there is excessive timing chain rattle. I specifically asked them to check the timing chain for no reason than to be sure because I checked and couldn't hear anything. The mechanic stated that he heard excessive play in the timing chain and it would need to be replaced in about 20k-50k miles. Yes, 20k-50k miles. Front control arms and cross over pipes have been replaced already.

So I have 2 questions. Would you consider this LR4 for $21k? Has anyone used an aftermarket warranty plan to get the timing chain fixed?

I also have a 2001 Disco since new and have done all the work on it myself... head gaskets, water pump, etc. etc. So thinking i can do the timing chain myself at some point.

Appreciate any thoughts.

Jamie

i would not drop that amount of cash on an LR4 that needs the timing chain replaced. It sounds as though you can do the wowrk yourself and since this is mostly labor you will save a ton of money; however, it was also indicate to me that oil was proabably not changed often enough [6k miles is max on these engines although i think factory specified like 15k] to preven early timing chain shoe wear.
You may also want to get a second opinion as i would be suspect that a mechanic would recommend 20-50k more miles on noisy chain as it really needs to be replaced immediately

Thank you for the reply. I agree it's too much, I guess I just needed some validation. If it had the HD package, maybe.

Thanks
Jamie

Ive had both the HD and non-HD. I you are planning adventures and off-road then hold out for an HD. If not go for the non-HD.

If the chain rattles I’d skip it on the LR4. Plenty of vehicles out there.

Thanks for the responses.

I agree with all of it. Good news is I found a 2015 HSE with the HD package, less miles, cheaper, and it comes with a 12 month, 12k mile powertrain warranty from the dealer.

It is going to be delivered to me since it is out of state. So glad I waited!
