Default New owner. One question

Hi all,

New owner of a 2015 LR4 with HD package here, black exterior beige interior. Still own my 2001 DII so have been on the forums for a while, but not in LR4 section.

Question first, and then an intro to the truck. I want to install an always on usb charger in the back for tailgating and connect it to the stop start battery. Thoughts on that?

Intro to the truck. 2015 HSE with HD package. 92k miles. All maintenance up to date. I bought from a dealership, but they left the new stop start battery in the back of the truck with the receipt from the previous owner. I called the shop where it was ordered and he read me off everything they have done. Other than maintenance, they changed the crossover pipes. I replaced the LCA's, got a master tech to do the alignment, and got new 255/60-19 Toyo Open Country AT3's.

Loving the LR4 so far!
Jamie

Using the stop/start battery… interesting. I don’t have the wiring diagram for this model. I hope you’re not at risk of depleting the primary battery.

Yeah, taking the LR4 and the new Defender out into the back 40, I learned keeping up is no trouble at all.

That's what I'm wondering... if the stop start battery will pull from the main battery with the engine off.

Congrats on the truck. Sounds like a heck of a vehicle. Not sure why you'd want to potentially drain the thing that's supposed to start the truck. I'd keep it separate and just use a Jackery or something that's 100% disconnected from your vehicle. The LR4s are pretty sensitive to low battery. Use the search function and look for LR3 LR4 Defender battery flat from "opening door too many times". It's a real problem. I'd avoid it personally. You can pick up a tailgating party battery (that you charge from the truck's 12VDC adapter while driving or from a 120V wall adapter) and then just use that during your tailgate party.

Better thinking @Troyan2019 ! or one of those ultra quiet honda generators then go nuts with all the gadgets at the tailgate party!

Thanks for the replies. Just to clarify, the start/ stop battery does not start the truck, it provides power to the electrical system when the car is turned off during the stop/ start process. The battery I had in there is completely depleted. It shows nothing on the voltmeter and won't charge at all on a charger. It has since been replaced. I'm assuming that the primary battery does not charge the stop/ start battery due to this.

That's really the question... can I draw from the stop/ start battery with the truck off without drawing from the primary battery?

Sorry. don’t have the schematic.
Good news, if you’ve replaced the battery I assume the intelligent stop/start is now working?? (provided you replaced with an agm battery)
Actually, the more I think about it, I wouldn’t proceed this way. These vehicles really do not respond kindly to less than optimal battery capacity. I would do as I do on my sailboat, get an ultra quiet, (and they are small and light) generator.

my .02 worth.
Cheers!

Well, the stop start worked once and then didn't. No lights on the dash now, but im happy with it not working. The battery was a LR OEM. Agree with all your suggestions. Thanks.
