Got an L319 with the interior out. N/S/F and R soaking. Front carpets are a write off. They have begun rotting and smell horrendous. They're cheap too so have new on order. After a load of water testing I can say the water is coming in from the base area of the windscreen on the N/S. I have removed the external A pillar trim panel and taped up the holes. Water still comes in. The hose is moved up and done the windscreen on the left side. With the windscreen taped up aswell water still comes in, but I cannot be sure that isnt collected water within the A pillar area and kick panel vacinity. Do LR leak on the bulkhead? To be fair with the hose facing the floor at the base of the windscreen in the corner, I dont see any additional water other than what is likely to be inside the area already. Many Thanks for an ideas.
Last night I left the vehicle with the left side of the screen taped up. This morning the car is full of water again. I have not fully taped up the windscreen from the sunroof to the scuttle. Thanks
I have never worked on an LR4, in fact I try to steer clear of anything JLR. My methodology thus far is just a steep learning curve. I have the sunroof taped up and the left side of the screen as you can see in the images. Its been raining and there is water in the car again. Water does not get into the car from the centre of the dash so I have ruled out the air intakes for the HVAC etc. Water comes down the wiring loom as shown in my images. Quite how it gets to the door seal is another thing! Where the tape meets the grooves in the roof, they have been greased. Am I missing something obvious gents?
Another round of tests. With the sunroof and the windscreen taped off the water still comes in from above the cable and earth block on the left footwell. It also comes in from the door seal but from behind the seam side not the velvet side. With the sunroof untaped and the hose on the sunroof, no water comes in. With the hose focused on the side of the windscreen, some water comes in but there is less of it. There is no leak in the centre. With the hose on the scuttle nothing come in plus the water only comes in the far left as the carpets were bone dry in the middle. It is too windy now so tomorrow I will put water down the sunroof drains. The battery and half the dash is out so it may not work.
Looks like your in the UK - is that right? Right hand drive? Not sure what parts are switched compared to the US. We have tons of reports of water ingress on the right side (passenger side) of the car, but very few reports of this on the left (drivers) side. Maybe its the opposite for the UK?
Anyway, the sunroof drain is by far and away the most common leak, as you’ve probably read. The drain runs down the A pillar and connects to the exterior drain port not far above that wiring loom you’re pointing to (if I’m seeing that correctly).
But, the fact that you get no water leakage when putting water directly on the sunroof certainly seems to point away from the sunroof drain. The drain exits the car right above that wiring loom through to the air intake vent on the side of the fender - wonder if there is a grommet or something that could be leaking there. In other words, not the sunroof drain itself leaking, but a leak at the penetration of the drain through the car to the exterior. Doesn’t really seem likely to me, but maybe a possibility.
I’m not aware of any issues with water ingress through the drivers side firewall in the US, but certainly have seen reports on the passenger side. You said you ruled out the HVAC intake, but I’ll just relay that I’ve seen reports of the rain deflector for the HVAC intake being somehow bent or out of place so that rain running down the base of the windshield will get into that HVAC intake.
Thanks very much @jlglr4 You're right, UK. Got to get the names correct. Right the fender is a wing, yes? Does the wing just unbolt for inspection or does the front bumper etc have to come off first? As I am not seeing conclusive proof, I am and my client is, happy for me to dismantle more to find the source.
I haven’t removed a fender yet (knock on wood), so not sure what needs to come off. But, I understand that you don’t need to remove the fender to get to this drain connection that I’m talking about.
This video shows gaining access from the inside under the dash: https://www.bing.com/videos/search?v...E1F8160C&q=lr4 sunroof drain&shtp=GetUrl&shid=1dc2a97e-6c0d-4225-b39a-d085ae57e75e&shtk=TFIzIFJIIFN1bnJvb2YgRHJhaW4gUmVw YWlyIC8gQ0pCIFJlbW92YWwgLyBXYXRlciBvbiBGbG9vcmJvYX Jk&shdk=VGhpcyB2aWRlbyBjb3ZlcnMgdGhlIHJlcGFpciBvZi B0aGUgcmlnaHQgaGFuZCBzaWRlIGZyb250IHN1bnJvb2YgZHJh aW4gYW5kIHRoZSByZW1vdmFsIG9mIHRoZSBDZW50cmFsIEp1bm N0aW9uIEJveCAoQ0pCKS4gVGhpcyByZXBhaXIgaXMgZGlmZmlj dWx0IGR1ZSB0byB0aGUgbmVlZCB0byByZW1vdmUgdGhlIExhbm QgUm92ZXIncyBDSkIuIEl0IHdvdWxkIGJlIGFkdmlzYWJsZSB0 byBvbmx5IGF0dGVtcHQgdGhpcyByZXBhaXIgaWYgeW91IGhhdm UgbW9kZXJhdGUgdG8gYWR2YW5jZWQgY2FyIHJlcGFpciBza2ls bHMsIEkgZG9uJ3QgdGhpbmsgYSBub3ZpY2Ugc2hvdWxkIGF0dG VtcHQgdGhpcyAuLi4%3D&shhk=p974lvXc3%2BjRvTsrjmIzzp R8myTvmKen%2FtBwTeMDfcI%3D&form=VDSHOT&shth=OVP.-8Fw1bkHQHtlEboUjkiWDwHgFo
Others have reported gaining access from the outside by removing the vent on the fender and (somehow) removing the interior air plenum. Post 2 in this thread shows what it looks like when the vent is removed: https://www.landroverworld.org/threa...ns-slow.43325/
@jlglr4 Oh top man. I am always learning new stuff as I start to work on other marques. Usually I stick to pre 2003 BMW. Thank you for this. I have watched and will check it all tomorrow. Cheers
