Default Anyone mount a laptop in their rover?

I'm just starting a project to put an xPlore rugged tablet PC in my disco II and some communications equipment.

It's proving challenging because of the lack of space between the two front seats.

has anyone seen pics of previous installations? or have you done something similar?

Thanks

I have seen a Discovery at a car show that had a small laptop mounted in the front on the dash. It had a metal arm the looked home-fabricated that was bolted on the right side of the center console by the passenger's feet, extended upwards maybe a foot, and had a platform that a laptop sat on at an angle . It was pretty sturdy, but took up most of te leg-room on the passenger side as well as the car space.

Sorry I don't have pics, but good luck on mounting your computer.

I replaced the lid to my center cubby with 3/4" plywood, installed lazy susan hardware and mounted a shallow tray I made from 1/8" oak plywood on top of that to hold my Thinkpad. I was going to make another tray padded on the ourside to fit over the laptop tray when I'm not using it, but haven't gotten around to it.

Sounds like an awesome ordeal. Got any pics of the finished product?

yeah, i'll say.

still trying to work out a scheme, etc. for the xPlore tablet. i'm also looking at the possibility of using a panasonic toughbook because of its built in keyboard (you can plug a keyboard into the xPlore and have it tucked away somewhere until you're ready to use it, but it's probably more of a pain for my app).

thanks for the comments guys. i'll post pics of progress when i've got something substantive...

If you know any police officers you might ask them if they can get you a catalog such as Kays or Streichers (I think). They have a bunch of different laptop mounting options for vehicles (prob mostly crown vics and the like) but you may find an option for undercover vehicles. Firefighters can also get these catalogs but I think for most orders you need to be a cop (or know one).

i am in the middle of this project right now actually it has been a bit tricky trying to figure it out but from what i have learned and checked so far at least for mine its a 96 disco series 1 SE, but right about the glove box and below the air bag compartment you can make a cut in the dash now it will go straight back. Now the plan is building a holder that works just like my front cup holders: basically you push on the front and it comes sliding out, that way it is hidden and does not take up room with bulky products like arms that can fold down and etc. this is my plan tho take what you will lol.

so as soon as i figure out all the stuff i will let you all know how it works lol

Yep you might want to check some police car that have laptops in their car. I think you will have a good idea if you see it.

I'm actually looking into this myself just now.

All the web sources point to the RAM universal rack which appears to use 3 goosenecks to bolt down, and I'm not at all happy with that idea. I'm going to look at the seat mounting points, and talk to a local metal fab house to see if I can get a custom 3 point bracket with a up-tube fabbed out of steel, and then I'll put something up top.

Avoiding the passenger airbag deployment zone will be difficult (mostly because it's not documented how wide it is), but not impossible, and I think I can push it far enough left to avoid making the seat unusable in the process.

I'll let y'all know how I come along. If it works out well, I'll tell the shop to hold onto the plans. :-)
