Can the flares not be removed to do this?

Yes, you can remove the trim to prep and paint, but you have to be carefully not to break them when doing so. You also have to clean the fender and the back of the trim of the double-sided tape left over on each surface before you can re-apply the trim with new 3M double-back adhesive tape.

I hate the fender flares, I am removing all of mine when my Tactical Rover rear bumper arrives, It makes the truck look so dated.

Looks Very Nice BDII !!
I just did all my Bumpers and Flares on my 06 LR3 with Dupli-Color Trim Paint. (Satin Black). I don't know if it is a newer product from Dupli-Color then the Bumper Paint but it does not require the primer or any adhesion promoter steps. I sanded with 320 grit just to scuff up the plastic and give the paint something a bit more to bite on. I opted to keep the dimpled look. The only reason for that decision was if and when the plastic get's scratched or nicked, I can just shoot a quick patch of paint back over it.

Here's a link to some pics.

I am doing the same thing , Remove the flairs before my bumpers arrive . I might mess with them and try and refinish them over the winter but prob not ..I think it will be a cleaner look without ...
