OK I wanted to be sure cause I told the shop that size but the email invoice quoted different, I just emailed the correction

Buy this DOM. Order Mild Steel A513 Tube in Small Quantities at OnlineMetals.com

Tap it with this. http://www.mcmaster.com/#2595a854/=t754da

Get some jam nuts.
Larger OD than other HD rods on the market and 3/8" wall which is also thicker than other rods.

i bent my 1.5 x .25 DOM tie rod first rausch trip in my XJ. threw that tube into the scrap pile and drilled my knuckles out for an over the knuckle setup to keep the steering up higher. the rover steering is pretty high up stock, and it isnt in front of the axle so you arent smashing all 5000lbs of rig into it. DOM would be fine.

i've seen aluminum used, and its awesome. lightness is cool too.

Summit sells that aluminum steering but quoted me $300 for the 2 rods
