I just bought this used 2017 Discovery HSE (30k miles) from Carmax and within 5 days, I had to get it towed due to a coolant leak. They inspected it today and found a leak/crack in the Coolant Crossover Pipe. I am still within my return policy to get a full refund for this purchase and wanted to get some outside opinion. The tech said this is a fluke, but I am cautious to continue as I don't want reoccurring issues.
Wrong forum here - this is for the older models. Congrats on the new Rover though.
Bottom line - It's a coolant leak, I don't think it's a big dea. l (I have owned a 2018 Discovery the same body style as yours). It should be under warranty right?
You bought a Land Rover though, it is going to have problems. Worth every single one. I've had 16.

Just the beginning, man. If you have the time and can turn a wrench ( fix things yourself) keep it. If you don’t mind getting stranded and paying high repair bills keep it. If you don’t check either of those boxes go get your money back.
As someone already mentioned Rovers will have problems and I’ll add that the later the model the more difficult it is for a DIYer, especially a novice, to repair.
Same with the brand new Defender. TF guys (youtube) got a brand new and problems appeared after 160 miles. Even dealer shop couldn't fix it, LOL.
I'll stick with my D2, at least you can sort out the trouble on your own with a simple wrench.
Those TF guys... smdh… They had a great working and great looking D2 then sold it. Had a great working LR3/Discovery 3 then sold it. Bought a 2020 Defender and they are on their 3rd one in 3 months. Ay caramba!

I have a 2018 Disco HSE, haven’t made a payment on it yet, love the car….Have had it serviced and bought two tanks of gas, Battery went dead and electronics went nuts. Alternator? Battery? Just two months left on CPO warranty. Got it towed via Land Rover roadside. Dealer says it is a water pump leak that shorted exchange with battery and alternator. So they will cover under warranty. Will replace pump, thermostat, battery, generator, some seals, gaskets and cable linkage. Been at dealer for over a week, get it back maybe next week?
Almost a normal maintenance item it seems. Mine failed at 47k miles when I brought it home the day after purchase. Not worth getting it towed 4 hours back to the dealership in my case so I did it myself. There is a redesign of the pipe to strengthen it so I hope they put that one in. Also while I was in there I replaced the water pump, thermostat, hoses, rear cross over pipe (heat exchange pips) , and radiator as they are known issues.
there is a aluminum crossover pipe option now for these vehicle. I purchased it when it was on sale but have not installed it. https://amzn.to/3Lznhpf
I just found this in aluminum as well. Interesting for the oil connection at the back of the water pump. https://amzn.to/42kLlDm

How did you know yours was bad? How will I be able to catch it in the future?

experience with my lr4 would be the best way to describe it. After every drive I walk around the front of the vehicle and pay attention to any weird odors coming from the vehicle. Antifreeze is very easy to identify just by smell. In my case I was driving home after picking up the vehicle. Dealership swore they went over it but I still detected the smell at a rest stop. Looked under the hood and I could just barely see the coolant pooling up by the waterpump. After that I nursed it the last 50 miles home and found the issue the next day.
