I managed to break the bottom corner off my lift gate by hitting my head on it this morning. Fancy composite. Poor choice of materials for the use in this case.

Anyone have a similar experience yet? I'm just going to epoxy it back on and maybe reinforce it with a stiff wire.

 

Not sure what you broke with your head. Must be hard. The corners of my lift gate (tail gate) are metal, not plastic. Maybe you mean something other than what I'm calling the tail gate.

 

The part that goes up when the hatch is lifted. It's made out of plastic.

 

Sorry but I don't understand what part goes up when the hatch is lifted.
When I lift my hatch via the button on the outside or via the dashboard switch, only the hatch opens.
When I lift my hatch via the foot kick motion, the hatch opens and the inner half tailgate folds open.
But nothing goes up besides the big tail gate that includes the rear glass.
Can you please post a picture that shows what broke?

Wow, so you mean that entire panel below the tail lights for the whole width of the vehicle is composite and not metal. I didn't realize that. Gotta go out with a magnet and see.
I know parts of other brands that you think are metal are actually plastic - I've seen lots of cracked panels on a popular Ford SUV.

 

Just checked: the only magnetic parts on my D5 are the doors. Hopefully some of the other parts are aluminum.

 

That piece is aluminium so it's not magnetic. But it is part of the whole tailgate. Not a separate piece. You broke it on your head???

 

Guys the tailgate is entirely plastic, it's not aluminum.

My garage has a low ceiling so I have the hatch programmed to lift high enough to open but not crash into my garage door opening. I often hit my head on the inside of the hatch when unloading. This time I was rushing to grab some tools to remove my dead battery rounded the corner between my garage opening and the tailgate and hit the corner of the hatch with my forehead. Luckily I was wearing a baseball hat or it might of really hurt.

 

Ha, just searched for a used replacement. Found this one. Also has a "missing tip" on the same side haha. Be careful with the tips gang they will break.
