Discovery TD6 vs V6

However I wanted to point out the mass of electronics and other items that are now on Diesel engines not just has engines, which in itself means diesels aren’t any more reliable than a gas engine, unlike in the old days when ignition problems were a common thing on gas engines but Diesel engines with their inherent simplicity didn’t suffer the same. It’s an interesting perception that has hung around that diesel is more reliable than gas when that hasn’t been the case for about 25 years.

I get 24mpg on flat highway but I average 20 which is 80% on 45mph roads with plenty of red light intersections as I live in a suburban area.
If you look at the LR figures I seem to remember the diesel gets 5mpg better.
To do 10,000 miles at a 20mpg average I will use 500 gallons of premium.
So 10,000 miles at 25mpg average with a diesel would use 400 gallons, a saving of 100 gallons.
Prices vary nationwide but for simplicity if we say premium and diesel cost about the same and that it’s about $2.50 a gallon then I’d save $250 in fuel every 10,000 miles I drive. The diesel engine option is $2,000 more than a gas engine which is a good deal compared to some vehicles. But just to break even on that extra up front expense I would need to cover 80,000 miles. Only then would I start saving money on fuel...

This is about right from an mpg standpoint. I tend to average 24-25 around town.
One thing I'd say is that around here lately, diesel is about $1.89/gal and is roughly the same (or occasionally lower) than regular unleaded.
You're also using non-negotiated numbers in your pricing. Is there a premium for owning a diesel? probably. But it's not as much as it would appear. That said, I also have to buy DEF and the gassers don't. But it's pretty cheap if you DIY.
Anyway, to each their own. I'm not a diesel die hard, but I really do enjoy my truck. I'd probably also enjoy a gasser just as much, too.
