Default P360 engine oil type

Hello Everyone. Noob here ... first post, so please... be kind.
I am pretty sure this item might have been discussed many times, but my search in this forum(s) did not yield any meaningful results.
My question is: what type of oil does a Discovery 5 MY'22 P360 MHEV uses for the engine ?
Appreciate any answers in advance, and patience shown.

Welcome to the forum
but please confirm that any oil recommendations you receive online meet the very specific specs outlined in your owner's manual
and please change your oil and filter at a much shorter interval than required by your owner's manual, at least twice as often (half the interval) would be a good idea.
I'd answer your question but I'm not sure if your oil spec is the same as mine

Hello, I work for JLR corporate and can advise on this. We use a very specific high endurance 0W-20 synthetic oil in that powertrain. While we advise that you use our oil (it's not a common off the shelf synthetic) you are welcome to use any oil that meets our specification: STJLR.03.5006

You will be just fine if your chosen oil can meet that specification. However, you may find that the cost of those oils aren't much different than ours at some retailers.

In terms of intervals, please ignore some of the advice being shared on here. Our Ingenium engines have very low contamination levels and work just fine with extended oil changes. If you are doing frequent long distance trips and lots of highway driving for periods of greater than 20 minutes then just follow the computer calculations. If you are doing frequent short trips and lots of towing or heavy city idling I'd recommend you do a change annually regardless of mileage. Mileage is not really the important factor for calculating oil life, but rather the engine type, usage and period of time in use.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the great perspectives as always Insider. Question - how do you buy the JLR Castrol Professional? At least here in the USA I have tried and failed to find it anywhere in retail. And dealers seem to have it in a big oil drum. So I had to get the liquimoly that meets the spec instead
Is it possible to buy retail (in USA?)

Thanks!

Hello Mr. Insider - thank you for the advice.
I am kinda old fashioned, and as I have no doubt that your oils are great, I am of the principle "oil is cheap, engine is expensive". Following the same procedure as they do it at the dealership, I think I will change it myself more often than the book ( all OEM) - that won't hurt... right ?
But I see your point and appreciate the help and great info.

BTW - Now that I have the type of oil and make, I have found this at the dealership (OEM ) in Florida, for about 15-18 $/qt. - and they told me it takes about 9 qts.

My understanding is that Castrol is not selling that formulation to the public in the US (aside from JLR retailers). However, I believe you can obtain other brands in the market.

It's a very specific viscosity (on the lighter side) in tandem with a high grade base and lots of additives. However, Castrol (and most manufacturers) sell oils to the public which cover as many applications as possible rather than fringe formulations. Not all 0W-20 oils are created equal and there's a reason you see Mobil 1 and Shell marketing many variations of popular oils (like 5W-30). If there's enough demand for certain formulations then they wind up on the shelves. Since most JLR owners do not change their own oils and it's a fringe formulation within the US market- it's sold through retailers.

People fixate on oil brand but it's the specification people need to watch. If you meet the spec you've already passed our hurdles for flash point, evaporation, viscosity under load, detergents, etc etc. We set a high bar for these oils so we don't have to worry about them surviving many miles of abuse.

Thanks. Very helpful

Yes - I stick with the official spec so I get the Liqui-Moly from Germany that meets the required spec. As you say, not a lot of alternative options.

I have the same Discovery 5, 2022 MHEV P360 and am having the hardest time finding clear answers to questions related to oil and oil changes on this car.
@The Insider says that you need to use STJLR.03.5006 , but I called my local dealership to see if they could sell it to me and they said they could not becuase they purchase it in large drums.
I looked on Atlantic British's site and they have a 0W-20 that they sell with a kit, supposedly for this car,but the number on it is STJLR.51.5122.
How do I know if that oil is the right specs?
Also, does anyone with this car have details about changing the oil and filter? I've heard some people suggest that the oil can be vacuumed out of the dipstick slot, or do you need to take the bottom panel with its 15 or so bolts off and find the oil drain plug?

Oil change is simple. There isn't a dipstick - you just open the oil filler cap and there is a narrow tube inside. Attach a vacuum pump like a Mityvac to suck out all the oil. Then refill the same way. Easy, quick and clean. It's what the dealer does too

For oil specs tons of debates on this. I would stick to OEM spec as it has some specific additives. Others have run generic full synthetic but I'm not risking that for a few dollars

A friendly dealer may sell you the oil in your own container (I did that for a top off once). But you can buy it - the castrol recommended one is v hard to find in the USA (maybe commercial only). But others like Liqui-Moly and several others sell one that meets the spec. You can get that from FCP online

On those two specs, I believe one superseded the other. But you would need to check that

Don't forget oil filter too. Also easy.

The 2022 MHEV P360 Ingenium engine does have a dipstick and there is not a narrow tube in the oil fill area. I use that method on my LR4 with a mityvac, but can't figure out how it's supposed to be done on this disco 5. Does anyone on here have this year and engine model and do their own oil changes?
