Default Question re: DEF ('Refill 1.1 US gallons' message)

Hi there. First post on the forums. I bought a 2018 Discovery HSE TdI 1 month ago. I've been checking the mobile app periodically to see DEF range etc. I just noticed today it says "Range 3,842.5 miles." Beneath that it now says, in bolded lettering, "Refill 1.1 US gallons" (see attached image)

What does this mean? Do I need to 'top-up' the DEF despite the range being 3800+ miles? Any insight appreciated!

It just means you can top it up and if you do you should use that amount, you can carry on till the range is lower but do not allow it to get too low

Word of friendly advice from a previous diesel owner: I was carrying a bottle of DEF at all times with me. I always toped it at every other diesel refil.
Why ? the DEF is very acid (urea) and if the sensors are not immersed at all times, they may get corroded when exposed to air, or bad contacts, and can throw an error - expensive to fix.
The "book" is not always in your favor. Will it work till last drop ? sure, but in time it may degrade faster than you think.
Then again, I was also changing my oil at 1/2 intervals of what the book say. Oil is cheap, engine is expensive.
Enjoy - that is a fine car and engine.

Thanks for the advice. Definitely want to care for this thing, hoping it lives a long and happy life! Ordering some DEF now. In your experience, is it necessary to have an adblue bottle with the nozzle that screws directly into the refill pipe?

Use the regular def, the one you get at Autozone (their brand ). Any bottle would do. Only, if you spill on the engine bay, wipe it clean if it touches the paint.
Also, on the oil: check regularly if the oil level increases. Even by a bit. Some diesels (and I am not saying that these engines do it necessarily) have a tendency of dilution - diesel may get into the oil ( due to stupid regens the vehicle has to do ). If you see the level increasing, then I would say to change the oil asap. Then get with the dealer to see why ( and only if ) is happening. Friendly advice: change it at 1/2 term (e.g. if is stated 16000 miles, I would do it at 8000 miles or even less ).
On my previous RR I did changed it, regardless. Like I said, oil is cheap, and you can do it in your back yard if you have a compressor, in under 30 min. without a drop on the floor.
Good luck to you, and man, I miss that diesel feel.

I just ordered one of these funnels:

https://www.ecstuning.com/b-schwaben...BoC1a0QAvD_BwE

Hopefully it'll make refilling easier. I recommend 1 gallon jugs from your favorite auto parts store as its just easier to handle than the 2.5 gallon ones.

Also fun fact. The VW/Audi DEF bottles also work with the fancy D5 Adblue nozzle. They are a bit more expensive (like $10/half gallon) but in a pinch you can always find a VW dealer and its spill free.

Oh when you do a refill, wear clothes you don't mind getting smelly and WEAR GLOVES. I like Nitrile gloves but you do you. Also I highly recommend you use a misc towel to cover the engine bay/fender. If possible, try to refill somewhere there isn't any wind. Seems like everytime I go to refill my DEF bottle a hurricane jumps over the hedges and blows DEF everywhere....

I made this funnel. I use it on my VW and D5.
