Roof top tent?
#21
Roof load and static load are 2 different things; so I'd think most aftermarket bars and racks are solid enough. I'm just planning to go with the Rhino crossbars or similar and put my tent on them. Racks are great for things that need a rack, but it's stupid to get a rack for a tent, when crossbars are half the cost and the RTT will consume the entire rack rendering it useless for most anything else typically.

Back when I started this thread I had expected to already have installed one. However, the docs had other ideas for me. So, now I'm back on the hunt. Deciding between FrontRunner and Voyager. Voyager currently has their rack (non mesh bottom) at $1600, Frontrunner is $1300. So about 25% upcharge to lose the factory rails and get a front fairing. But Voyager still doesnt offer a ladder and I will need something since being in my "double 30s" jumping on the roof is not in the cards. I really like some of the RTTs that have shown up on this thread and I will be moving on something before summer. I currently have a 5200 mile circle set up to hit Cheyenne Frontier Days, Teton, Yellowstone and Devils Tower. Id like to be able to save on some hotel rooms, but at $2K for a tent, that's a lot of hotel nights.
Im really interested for some of my fishing trips where I can park at the boat ramp and get a nap in after a long day on the ocean.
Thanks to al who contributed to the thread.
