Default Shifter **** is Hard to Twist

The shifter **** in my D5 has been getting kinda stiff. When shifting from park to drive, it has resistance that it didn’t have before. It almost stranded my wife one day because she likes to turn the car off before shifting into park because the D5 will put it in park for her. With the stiffness, it struggles to do that shifting for her. it was refusing to start because it wasn’t in park. We had to twist the **** to park while it was down to let it work again.

anyone had that or know what the issue is?

I don't have that issue, but it could be related to her turning off the engine before putting the car in park. It is an electro-mechanical switch. The auto shift to park is a safety feature; it is not intended for constant use.

As the weather has cooled off here, I’ve now noticed that on cold mornings the shifter is back to its smooth movement. Warmer days are when it’s got a lot of friction.

Things expand in heat, so maybe an o-ring is out of its groove or torn. Maybe see if you can spray some silicone lube into the gap around the ****.

I pulled the **** off today to take a look at turns out it’s just the ****. Mine has a rubber grip around the side with a metal top. The rubber has expanded and isn’t tight fitting around the plastic housing to which it’s attached. Works great without that rubber in the way. Ordered a new metal one to replace and it will be working good again.

yep. found it on amazon. gotta make sure you get the correct version though. there are a few different shapes on the under side. mine (and assuming all d5's) have the version with 4 square shaped pegs. look at picture 5 of this link, though it might be kinda hard to tell.

edit: I’ll share again after I get it installed. The **** arrives tomorrow

Here’s a better picture of it. You can also see the rubber that’s all warped and pulling away from the inner plastic structure.

That link shows it's for the D4, not D5.

It says a lot of things in the title, but it also has a D5 in the bottom corner of the first picture. The piece looks to match what I pulled out of my 2018 D5. I can share more once I have received the part.
