I have the Yokohama Geolandar A/T G015 tires. The ride nicely, and are quiet. But I believe from the amount of wear and miles driven so far, that they might last only 20K to 25K miles. They have a much longer tread life warranty so when they are shot I plan to replace them with something else. I used to run Nitto Terra Grapplers on my LR3. That's the older version and they were rugged and lasted about 45K miles but were a little noisy during their last 10K or so. My last set was the newest version of the Nitto Terra Grapplers called the G2. I only had them for a few thousand miles before I sold the LR3 but they sounded a little funky to me on dry pavement. Still, I might try them again on the D5 next.
The other option I might try is a Cooper tire because I can get them for dealer cost and that seems like a pretty good price. I've never tried Cooper's before.
I'm looking at the Yokohamas in 275/55/20 to replace the Pirellis before winter next year, but doesn't look promising if they don't last. I figured with a 60k warranty they should be good for at least 40k before having to replace them.
I'd be happy if I got 40K and they were pro-rated. But no way. And I don't drive them hard at all. When they wear out at 20K or 25K I'll get a large prorated amount. I'm not sure if they'll make me replace them with Yokohama to get the pro-rated amount but if they do I plan to replace them with Yokohama, then take them back within 30 days for replacement under their 30 day satisfaction policy. I'll tell them I plan to do this and maybe they'll let me try another brand. I've done pro-rated warranty many times at Discount Tire with no problem but that was with the same replacement tire (Nitto). Discount is easy to deal with but if I get any flak I have a manager I know that will help me out.
Hmmh, just at 10K here but no noticeable wear yet . . . we absolutely love them so far. Had to replace one because a piece of metal went in right at the sidewall but that wasn't the tire's fault.
Granted, you'd need to be closer to 20K I guess to really judge wear yet unless dealing with soft summer tread.
But, we've never gotten more than 40K out of SUV tires. Generally my wife's primary, I don't run them bald like some do. I start shopping at 4/32 and never go past 2. Just peace of mind with the wife's primary driver.
That's across Toyota, Volvo, VW, Porsche, Audi, and now LR.
I have no noticeable wear but I measured the tread depth when I removed the tires and installed the winter tires.
With 10/32nds new, and 2/32nds used after 5K miles, they'll only go 20K. And I wouldn't want them once they get below 4/32nds either.
And now, here in the Colorado mountains, our winter requirements are 6/32nds of tread. Once my winter tires are shot and I run the all terrains all year, I'll have to find tires that come with more than 10/32nds like the Yokohamas did. I see some brands/styles start with 16/32nds.
I loved the Nitto TGs but the G2s went from H rated to S and T and the driveability and treadlife suffered. Granted, we do not "need" 130mph rated ATR tires on these but the manufacturing techniques do get relaxed when meeting the lower speed standards.
Toward the end, I ran Nitto TGs on my Pepper year round. G2s I bought for the truck I actually sold to someone less picky.
