Hey all, winter is here, and it’s time for some new kicks on my Discovery 5. I’m planning to go with 275/55/20 without a lift and was curious about what others are running with a similar setup.
I’m a big fan of Nitto tires, I have the Terra Grapplers on my LR3 and love them. For the new rig, I’m considering the Recon Grapplers and was wondering if anyone has experience with them regarding fitment or rubbing? From what I’ve seen in other threads, the KO2s seem like a safe bet. Any other safe bets with Nitto's?
Falken Wildpeak AT3's, no issues with LT275/55/20. Have been fantastic on wear, in rain, snow and gravel forestry roads. Have stayed in perfect balance in the year and half that I have had them on my D5. Would highly recommend. Won't buy another set of K02's as the pair I had on my LR3 dry rotted and were terrible in wet conditions. Other tires I have had that I would recommend are Cooper Discoverer Rugged Treks and Toyo Open Country ATIII's. The Rugged Treks were very loud, but they were on a Jeep Grand Cherokee and I would like to believe the sound dampening on a Disco is much better. The Mickey Thompson Baja's looked enticing too and are supposedly right up there with the Falkens and Toyos in consumer testing/rating.
I second the rugged treks which I currently run on my disco. They are louder than the stock tires obviously but I guess the sound deadning makes them quieter. With the radio on they're pretty much unnoticeable. They are also pretty bad on fuel but its the price you pay to look cool and perform great in everything except light snow. Falken or rugged trek is the mve.
We off-road (desert & rock crawling) quite a bit. I have 2" rods, 275/55 20 Nitto Recon Grappler tires. At full lock, there is a small amount of rubbing, but almost never have to go full lock. On the highway, I really don't think they are much nosier than stock. When off-roading, we air down to 18-20psi, and to date, have not had anything we couldn't crawl over.
When my D5 had 16,000 miles on it I replaced the 20" x 8.5" OEM wheels and 255/55R20 Goodyear Eagles (including the spare) with 20" x 9.5" Redbourne wheels and 285/50R20 Nitto Terra Grapplers. No lift was needed, and I was very happy with them and had no clearance problems, even when the vehicle was lowered to the ease-of-entry height. They were noisier than the dead-silent Goodyear Eagles but that was a small price to pay for the improvement in handling (due to the wider wheels and tires) and off-road capability. Last year (at 60,000 miles) I replaced the Terra Grapplers with 285/50R20 Nitto Recon Grapplers. The Recon Grapplers are noticeably quieter than the Terra Grapplers were, and I couldn't be happier with them.
