‘97 Disco with P1316
Hi all,
New to the forum but have been reading for a couple of years. Was hoping I could get some insight as to what’s going on with my Truck. I have the ‘97 Disco SE7 4.0 V8. I recently got codes (I forget which) but they were pointing me towards replacing ignition coils. I replaced all coils and now my car is popping up with a P1316 every 5-10 miles and can feel a shudder when accelerating. Is there something simple that is causing this? Also not sure if this is relevant but at high speeds on the highway (70+) there will be a thin white smoke seeming to come from underneath the car (not the exhaust). Hoping I can get help from one of our seasoned disco vets
Thank you in advance,
Z.

heh there.
You have a misfire. The P1316 is a misfire, where no specific cylinder is identified. I have the same problem right now on my 98 gems 4.0 after I redid the head gaskets.
Some things to check (same process i'm going through)
1. You replaced the coil pack but did you also replace the wires ?
2. What do the spark plugs look like ? on mine, i had 7 fouled oiley plugs and 1 clean plug (#3) In my case , i'm leaning towards an injector issue in my case.
3. Are you losing Coolant? blown headgasket(s) can cause a misfire. If the coolant were dripping onto the exhaust , it would burn off and cause white smoke.

I had checked all wires before replacing and they looked pretty new (the rest of the engine is pretty visibly covered in gunk and greasy but they looked totally clean and brand new in comparison so didn’t think that would be a factor. I haven’t had the chance to check the plugs yet as I didn’t have the 14mm plug needed but I’m going to pick one up today and have a look.. pretty sure the truck has never had a tune up so I wouldn’t be surprised if the plugs were 10+ years old. Lastly I don’t think I’m losing coolant through the gasket, but since you mentioned coolant my filler cap seems to be the wrong one for the truck and doesn’t cover all the threads, and when the temperature rises in the truck I’ll sometimes hear a hissing from around the cap itself. Concerning the white fog like smoke, I was reading more into it and think It may be the sea foam I used in my tank with during my last fill cleaning out any residue (fingers crossed lol).

Thank you, glad to be here.
Quick update, changed all spark plugs and didn’t seem to have any residue or liquids near or in the threads into the cylinders (a little soot, but nothing abnormal) so looking good with regards to the gasket. I do have an overfull oil tank which I’ll be bringing up with JiffyLube, useless f$&kers. Thinking this may be the reason for the white fog when at high speeds?
Checked the ignition cables (7mm) and they’re all looking pretty tired so they’re next on the list to replace, will get the 8mm as I’ve heard they’re more robust for the older Disco. I’m hoping this is causing my P1316 problem as I found the rubber boot on plug 5 was split and came off in 2 pieces, figure this may be the cause of the misfires?
Reset codes after changing sparks and ran the car for around 5 miles and got the code again. Hoping it’s just the TLC and new cables needed, and of course a drain of some of that oil, any suggestions on how I should do this rather than going under for the drain plug? Have around 2 qts too much, crazy ridiculous 🤯
Thanks for hearing me out guys, hope I’m getting somewhere with these repairs.
