Disco in Costa Rica
My name is Tom Wilson and I'm a retired engineer living in Costa Rica. I've had a 2003 Discovery two (145K miles) for about 16 months now. The vehicle was imported from the US about 4 years ago and is perfect for the roads (rough gravel) and weather (torrential rain) that we frequently encounter here. I've always been a shade tree mechanic and it it essential here - the local shops have no concept of reading a manual or checking their work. They just find a used part that will fit and send the owner out the door. Looking forward to exchanging ideas and experience with others.
Pura Vida! What area are you in? I used to enjoy seeing the old series rovers there around San Jose. If you are retired though you are likely over towards the beach or mountains! Like you said, you are your the owner and the mechanic there. Good luck!
We live by the beach near Flamingo - Tamarindo is the closest town of any size. Our property manager has an old Defender that he has restored to perfection and I agree it is nice to see the old ones well cared for. My only complaint about the Land Rover is that the cupholders don't hold coconuts very well.
