Default Got my dream truck! 2000 Disco II, 56k miles!

Hey there, new to the forum. After long debate with myself over an XJ or a DII, the disco won out. It is my daily driver & my off-road love. This one had an interesting background, with all the service records & CarFax to validate it. So for the 1st 10 years it was owned by a wealthy elderly woman in Hollywood. Her Jaguar was her daily driver so she only put 13k on this. She paid thousands in routine maintenance and repairs during that time, all done by the Jaguar dealer. Then a couple other folks briefly owned it and put another 10k miles on it. Then, an off-road enthusiast bought it. He put what seems to be a 5" lift on it, independent suspension, and fabbed and welded a cool bumper for the front. He didn't put a lot of miles on it either since he had other vehicles. He sold it to his buddy, who I bought it from. This guy bought it for his 16 year old son and they had it for 4 years. The son wasnt into off-roading and drove it mostly to and from high school and then college just a couple miles away. So while the son didn't put a lot of miles on it, he also went 4 years without ever really doing routine maintenance nor telling his dad when something needed attention. I bought it a few weeks back. Got it for a really low price, knowing it needed some work. After looking at many discos, I fell in love with this one the first time I saw it. I had planned to do much of the work on this myself, but seems everything I try I run into a situation where the disco is simply different than anything I've seen before!

So far I've replaced the front breaks. Need to do rear and all rotors still. Replaced the spark plugs. Messed up a wire while doing 1 of them (bracket inside the wire came off on the old spark plug). The wires seem impossible to do. Took it to a shop to have a new wire put on the one I messed up. Somehow need to figure out how to replace the rest of the wires myself. eek! Had a mechanic replace the radiator with a cheap $100 new one from eBay -- we shall see how the cheap part pans out for me. Love the Land Rover specialist mechanic I found. He seems to be priced fairly, but still out of my budget for the most part so I'll need to figure some of this out myself still. Bought a new hood latch but havent put it on yet. Replaced the ignition, not OEM but Alantic British. Ordered a new key/remote housing, put the old chip in it, now just need to get the new fob keyed to match the new ignition key. Having a hard time finding someone to cut it as it's steel. Replaced the factory stereo with a new Kenwood. Put in a Rockford Fosgate sub. I've got some fairly significant oil leaks from the valve covers and the oil pan. Mechanic loosely quoted me $1600 just to resolve the valve cover leak *sigh*. I'm putting about a quart in every 150 miles. Not sure where that ranks on the significance scale. Have an exhaust leak. Mechanic said one place it can leak from is worse than the other, mine is the less severe place. Also have the 3 amigos on. To make room for the custom bumper the windshield washer resivor was removed. Need new wheels, tires, and rear shocks. There's more little things, but this is what come to mind. Also would like to put a locker on the diff.

Some non-mechanical things I aim to do are to fab and weld a rear bumper. To lineX the entire outside. Remove the headliner and lineX it inside. Maybe fab my own tire/Jerry can carrier. Add a roof rack. Remove the fender flares. Make a fold down table for the rear door.

Just got back from our first roadtrip together. 800 miles round trip to Yosemite. Took the dual back seat out and made a sleeping area for myself! Dispersed camped along the way in various mild terrains.

I love this thing, but it still needs a lot of love. I've already read so many posts on here that have helped me a lot. Happy to have this forum to join! Long post but figure I'll put it all out there in case anyone has anything to share related to any of this!

That would be a pretty significant oil leak. I would get that sorted asap
