Hi All,
Just want to introduce myself. I am in Toronto and have been working on cars since 1990. My offroading experience began in 1995 in a Suzuki Samurai and now, into Land Rovers.
I am a technician in an offroad shop here in Toronto since 1998. Working on and off mostly on Jeeps, Toyotas, Suzukis and the Big3 brands.
After I have been offroading in a Suzuki Samurai over these years, I have always something that got a solid front axle, coil sprung, that is non-Jeep. There isn't many choices other than FJ80 Landcruisers and since I have always wanted a Land Rover, I brought a 1995 RRC LWB three years ago. This truck was from the USA so rust wasn't so bad but still, "A"pillar/cowl/tailgate floor rust was an issue. After spending about 300 hours working on it on and off, I managed to get it on the road this past summer and absolutely loved it.
The RRC was initially my beater, but after spending so much time and effort working on it, I couldn't get myself to use it for winter since the salt they use here on the roads is so harsh on any vehicle.
October 2013, I found a 98 Disco D1 that got a bad starter, 5 hours away from Toronto. I ended up brought a new starter and my toolbox, took the bus and met the seller. The truck looks good inside and out, underneath got a thick layer of rustproofing. On top of that, it was a SD, no sunroof, fabric seats. Initially, I was hoping that the starter relay was the problem, but no such luck. I got on the ground and after got myself totally covered in black gooey rustproofing/engine oil, I managed to replace the starter. I brought the truck and drove it home without much incidence other than seized rear brake calipers.
After I got it home, I started pulling panels and carpets and found out the usual bottom of the "A" pillar/relay recess panel on both sides were rusted badly. There is a small coolant leak on the bottom corner of the radiator.
After about 200 hours working on this truck, it on the road temporarily.
Anyway, I hope I will be able share my experiences and contribute to this forum and be able to help each other out and most importantly, have fun.
