Default Hey everyone!

Hi everyone,

I just bought my first ever Land Rover and will be picking it up tomorrow. I'm super jacked to get it. (Still waiting to get my dream car, a Range Rover - so I went with the next best thing.) I stumbled along this forum and thought it wouldn't be a bad idea to sign up. I'm pretty new to the Land Rover vehicles so please take it easy on me - I'm def. a noob. I also have a caddy cts, but wanted to get an suv for our often weekend trips up north. I was wondering if you guys had any tips or anything that I should watch out for or what I should keep an eye on. Here are the details below and please let me know if you think I paid the right price for it and whatnot. Also, does BMW still own Land Rover?

2004
Land Rover Discovery II HSE7
72,000 miles
Leather interior, fully loaded (power, heated seats)
Heat/AC rear ceiling
Grill guard
Running boards
Backup censors
2 moon roofs
3rd row seating - 2 seats fold up or down
Tow Package
In very good shape - just has a few minor scratches on the outside.
They were asking $12,999 and I paid 11,700.

Any thoughts/advice are definitely welcome. I've read these babys are known to last for 200,000 if taken care of. I know the repairs and gas are going to be pretty expensive, but worth it. I really hope this thing doesn't need any major repairs for while.

Sorry for the long post and thanks for reading it. I look forward to reading everyone's responses!

Kyle

You should have all fluids flushed...Oil Change, radiator flush, power stearing, and tranny. check the hoses for leaks and replace if needed.... these vehicles are known for poor cooling systems. Enjoy your new Landie!!!!

I have a 97 with only 125K on it. After working thru all the previously ignored items mine is running incredibly well.

One day, I was working on it in the driveway and two other LR owners pulled in to see how I was doing. One was in a 90's RRC that the previous owner had spent a fortune on having engine rebuilt and other things only to learn the frame was too far gone to pass state inspection. He bought it as scrap but was driving it anyway.

The second guy was in a 2004 that I had looked at as well at a nearby small dealer who specialized in Buy here pay here deals. Jerry had given him 8 grand cash out the door. Within a month or so he was driving it into Pittsburgh when a fire truck came up with sirens screaming. Another driver trying to move out of the fire trucks path clipped Jerry's front fender and by the time the insurance company was thru, it was considered a total. He could have kept the wreck for $1200, which I begged him to do.

Jerry got a pristine 2001 with 90K on it. We went thru the paperwork, the last owner before him was a young married couple that took it to the dealership and were charged $5600 for the 90K maint. They ended up seling it to Jerry for $6500 to recover from paying the dealer so much for the tuneup and fluid service.

He recently bought a Range Rover Sport from another pal of his who has a garage specializing in foreign exotics and he needed a car hauler so he called Jerry and they made a sweet cash deal.

TATA Motors of India now owns Land Rover.

Before you go spending any more time and money. I would suggest you review what documentation/receipts you have on your purchase. Also contact LR dealership and they should be able to give you the maint history if it was taken to a LR dealership.

You also want to inquire as to the status of any recalls.

Also be aware that the DII had a driveshaft that was made without greasable u-joints. Due to them being right by the hot cats, the front one tends to dry out and self-destruct without much warning. The driveshaft thrashing around under the vehicle then punches a hole in the transmission case and the cats.

The very first thing you need to do is get underneath it and look at those driveshaft u-joints. If the stock one are on there, get that taken care of fast!
