Importing a European Defender 90 to the USA?
Hey all,
First time poster, first time lurker as well! Anyway, I'm living in Germany right now but looking to return to the US in the next few years. I'd love to bring a diesel Defender 90 back with me so I'm looking into the plausibility of that now. Has anybody tried it? Are there insurmountable issues involved with bringing a non-US spec model of a vehicle no longer sold in that market to the US? I'd be very interested to hear from anybody who done or tried to do it.

Easy answer: you can't.
The smog and importation restrictions are far too complicated.
Best thing is to buy a Disco once you get here. Yep, it's not a D90, but they're a LOT cheaper and more plentiful used.

I didn't think that diesels are bound by the same EPA rules as gas powered. If it's an older Defender, then it may be a moot point because the EPA rules don't apply to vehicles after a certain age. The DMV has a web page [http://www.dmv.org/] that you might find helpful.
