New To Land Rovers
Ok, I'm gonna just jump in here, hopefully this is the place I need. I have always owned Jeeps or fords. however I am now selling my F150 and looking at buying a 1994 Land Rover Discovery. it has 148k on the engine. The seller claims it runs rough during wet weather. From my experience this is usually the distributer or distributer cap. But I have read that the Discovery doesn't have a distributor. So I may be at a loss. the only other problem he states is that the Sunroofs don't work, but are fixable. He's only asking 1900 for it, which sounds perfect for me. I don't have a commute, I get to work from home, so I don't want a big car payment on something that I rarely use. Not to mention the other complaints I hear are about gas mileage. Does anyone have any pointers? What should I look for when I inspect this vehicle? Any common symptoms that may point to a larger problem that I may want to avoid? Thanks.....

have you drove it?
seems nice from the pics, i'd get it, can't go wrong for $1900
are there any scratches? interior ok?? how does it run other than wet weather? how often does it rain? is it close to texas, i'm even interested

LOL, unfortunately the guy is out of town until next week, so I can't go look at it until late next week or weekend so I haven't seen it yet. According to the current owner it runs great except in wet weather. Its nowhere near TX, and honestly that doesn't really matter, because barring some sort of major issue with it, I think I've decided to get it. As I said, I used to own Jeeps, so I'm well aware of what a "hobby" vehicle can get me into. I think I just have alot to learn about these things. From reading here and other sites, the Rover is a completely different beast. I feel like I'm having to learn basic mechanic troubleshooting all over again. It should be fun.
The 1994 does have a distributer 1996 and up do not.
I have found that you can solve most problems with that
have to do with water with dielectric grease.
The other thing is if it rains out and your LR will not start
you need a alternator I have seen this twice.

Sounds good, I will keep those things in mind. Not quite sure how the altenator being bad would keep it from starting if it was raining as long as the battery is good, but I'll take your word for it. You know, I'm not going to backspace and retype what I just wrote, but I reread it and it sounds not so good, I'll just say that it wasn't meant to, but I'd LOVE an explanation of that LOL, that would be something completely new to me.
The altenator when well worn can still charge but when damp
or wet can ground out and not start.
It took me a year to find this the first time, do to the altenator
charging less than needed.
I would have thought that with dual batteries I would not have had
a problem like that, it is set up for both batteries to work together
all the time, almost 2000 cold cranking amps.
I have always used dual batteries so I think that the demand on the altenator
is less and goes out slower.
Or it would just be my lack of luck.
