Default New member looking to get into land rovers!

Hello all! I've been looking into getting myself a Land Rover Discovery series 1 as my DD/ off road truck. I currently own a Jeep Grand Cherokee but I like the looks and off road reputation of the discovery. I have been doing some research and I'm not sure what to think, some people say Land Rover is the best and others say they are nothing but trouble. I'm a mechanic currently learning my trade and working at a European car shop so I want to do all my own repairs but my major concern is can I get good parts on the cheep and should I expect to be fixing my truck once a week? I would really like to get myself a discovery but I'm not a rich man so I figured I should see what people who own a Land Rover have to say. Thanks for reading!

Disco Is are good trucks. The most important key to success with a Disco I or II is mechanical skills and a little patience. It sounds like you've already got both.

I've had a Disco II for sixteen years and they still had brand new Disco Is on the lot when I bought my II. Had I known then that I would still have the truck now (which is extraordinary for me as the get a new car every two years guy) and for simplicity and durability I would have gotten the Disco I.

Parts are getting harder to find for Disco Is, and especially cosmetic pieces. They also have a different engine and transmission setup (different and less electronic crap) than Disco IIs. If a Disco I fits your price range I say go for it. You can spend less than you would on a jeep up front and have a neater truck. If your price range would stretch a little I'd get a 94 range rover.
