Hi all,

Time for my first post – I’ve been on here learning, monitoring conversations and really appreciating all of the extremely helpful advise since purchasing my Disco back in July 2021. It’s a very clean 2003 SE with ~245k miles (100k since brand new dealer-installed engine), and so far I’ve followed the basic recommendations I’ve found here – Extinct’s in-line t-stat mod, new front driveline from BPU, added an Ultraguage to monitor temps – as well as a few other necessary maintenance fixes and upgrades.

The Ultragauge has been a super helpful addition, but unfortunately I added that (and Extinct’s inline mod) after the truck had overheated on us two times (once was pretty bad). As can be expected, one of the head gaskets (right side) has started to fail, and with 100k miles on this new engine (and given how quickly/easily it overheated on us, with no warning) I’m inclined to swap the whole thing. I’m positive I’ll need to be posting and getting some support as I go down that path, so I wanted to start off by saying “hi” and introducing myself.

My name is Matt and I live in Fort Collins, CO. Any other Disco II owners in the area, would love to have a local contact to be able to bounce ideas and sourcing of parts around with.

Cheers!

Matt

Too bad about the overheat. If you’re lucky it’s just the HG and not a slipped liner.

Yeah, thanks. At this point I’m not liking the idea of having the head gaskets done (I’ll admit I’m a bit to intimidated to try that repair myself) just to find a slipped liner, cracked block, or some other disaster, so I’m just leaning towards a full heart transplant. At least then I’ll have good tabs on every mile on a new engine from here on out.

The HG job is a bit time consuming and you need a few extra tools that you may not have (not too expensive tools), but it’s really just a series of small jobs. If you follow the Rave manual and keep everything organized it’s not difficult.

Welcome to the board. Nice looking 03. To bad about the overheating issue. Plenty of help in the Dll section, if you do decide to tackle it yourself.

Thanks for the welcome, Deputy. This forum has been a huge help already, and I’m certain I’ll be leaning on it heavily as I start this next effort!
