New Member, Still Not an Owner
Hello Everyone,
I'm Adam, and I have a problem.
I'm looking to add a Discovery II to my fleet. I understand they are unreliable, slow, and get crappy mileage. I understand they are expensive to maintain.
I can't describe exactly why I am so smitten w/ the Disco II, but I am. It looks at home on the trail and at the country club. It looks luxurious and special without drawing too much attention. It is "old money" where other cars are "new money", it is steak where other cars sizzle, it is class where other cars are style.
I want to buy the best one I can find, and am looking at 2003 today that is priced entirely too high, seriously considering buying it. I will post that story elsewhere, but I wanted to say hello.

Welcome to the forum Adam! I have to admit that I actually laughed out loud at your introduction and comparison of class vs. style. We all have different reasons for loving our Rovers and you definitely captured the adoration of many. I don't know if you're considering buying from a used car lot or a private owner but here are a few things to look for or ask when giving it a test drive.
- has the front drive shaft been replaced or rebuilt? Does it have greasable u-joints?
- have head gaskets been done?
- are any lights illuminated on the dash? The 3-amigos (hill decent, traction control and ABS) haunt many of us on the forum.
- does it have dexcool coolant (red stuff) or green? (you'll want to switch over to green)
- does it have sunroofs? If yes.. do they work and do they leak?
- Radiator and thermostat been changed out?
That's a good start.. just some things to look out for on these beautiful beasts
Enjoy and good luck!

I don't really care the source of the purchase; I know Land Rover has an excellent reputation for making mechanics out of owners, so I expect all hell to break loose the moment I drive it home, anyways.
I appreciate the list of things to check. The consensus around here seems to be:
"Don't be a moron and spend 15k on a low mile truck"
"Be patient, and buy one around 100k that has already broken and been repaired a few times"
"Are you sure you're not mentally challenged?"
You have all been very helpful.
