Hi I'm in CA and have read the best and worst of LR ownership stories, being someone who has owned just about everything imaginable in the car world I have decided to get into the mix with a Disco and put it to use as my work truck.

I am buying it in the next 48hrs from a local shop whose previous customer could not afford the near $5,000 bill for the immense overhaul done recently in the last month or two. A big loss for the owner of the truck but not to a new owner.

Here's what the offering is: It's a 99' disco with 104k on the clock, black on tan int. No air susp or stability control extras.

It has just seen new water pump, new head gaskets, new cooling system, battery and all gaskets including timing cover gaskets and exhaust manifolds. Also will have new trans fluid and diff service.
Literally a full overhaul minus bottom end. Comes with a 6,000 mile warranty on the engine or 6 months. Everything works and it looks very good too.

I realize values are subjective and range from 2500-5000 as is, but I think $6000.00 is a fair price for one of these with service history and the work done to it. I realize there's much cheaper ones, but none that I have seen come with the assurance of good quality work by an English car specialist such as the place I am buying it from. Pretty rare that a shop will sell a customer's car.

What do you think about the deal and the price? Does this sound reasonable?

I bought mine with 98k in good running condition in May for $3300, and I'm about 1k in maintenance related repairs. I'm planning on doing the top end (head gaskets and other top end gaskets) after the winter, because it's getting close to that mileage.

Once that's done, I'll be at under $5000 for a Disco that has a solid engine, cooling system, suspension, and brakes, as well as a stereo in proper working order, wipers that don't hang up intermittently... you see where I'm going with this?

You're starting out the gate at $6000 for a disco with a solid engine, with no mention of suspension (original shocks are almost ready to expire, how old are tie rod ends? Ball joints?), a questionable front prop shaft, and all the other things that need attention at 104k that you don't know if they've been addressed or not.

I'm not saying you're going to get boned on this, but $6000 is a pretty high entry fee for a 104k example with new head gaskets.

Good luck in however you decide to proceed.

Did you get it 3 1/2 years ago? If so is it still w/you? running? Did same with a 98 last December (2015) and it seems to be quite good. Fuel pump replace so far and know U-joints in front and both shaft joints are coming up. Up near San Jose, U? enjoy.
