Default TD6 love

In 2017 I bought the new LR Discovery. I wanted to buy a Range Rover but they had no 3rd row seat. The salesman suggested a Land Rover Discovery. We wanted a diesel because we had an Audi Q7 diesel that we took to 135,000 miles and loved it.

Short story; we bought the new (at the time) model 2017 Disco with a TD6. The TD6 in my experience has been one of the best engines I ever owned in 40 years of driving.

We owned a wide variety of SUVs over the past 4 decades, GM, Ford, Lincoln, Cadillac, Audi, BMW and Land Rover. This Disco TD6 just rolled over 136,000 miles, and it’s been an absolute joy. It gets great gas mileage, about 23 MPG at 85 mph on the highway. It has torque to spare and tows heavy loads well. It can hold 7 adults comfortably. But we have maintained it well. I simply don’t have enough good to say about this SUV.

About 6 months ago we experienced our first mechanical issue (132,000 miles) The car was going into “limp mode” (restricted performance. After a couple trips to the dealership and independent mechanics, I learned the weak spot for this engine is the emissions system. The DPF filter over time gets clogged and the Cat also. The only solution by the dealer is to replace the exhaust, an $8k repair. But then you’re looking at doing the same thing in 75-100k miles.

The other option is to simply remove the restriction (dpf cat converter) and retune the engine.

I chose the latter option, since I plan on keeping this vehicle for at least another 100,000 miles. So far I’ve seen no more “limp mode”, an increase in performance and acceleration, and in fuel economy.

That’s been my experience with Land Rover products, and so far it’s been a “helluva ride”
