After The Junkyard - The Path To Recycling
Had about 2100 pounds of scrap matal to drop off, went to the Newell yard in my area, got $278. If you get the chance, it is intersting to watch. Big grapple lifts load off (like one truck at a time) and it goes on a conveyer. Goes thru the hammer mill (Newell shredder) and comes out as chunks the size of your fist. Another process seperates some more of the scrap and reduces size of pieces to about a golf ball. All brown. Comes out of the machine like a waterfall. Two cranes keep it constantly loaded. 30 foot piles of material, all moved around by big front end loaders and into rail cars for a ride to the recycling melt down. Safety first, if you didn't bring a hard hat you get to stand in a safety cage while they unload your stuff.

No. I had never seen one of these, but had seen plenty of the "Krusher" at the junk yard. Something that can shred a truck, engine block and all, in like 10 seconds is a serious machine.
I have a bunch of stuff I need to take.
Had several gearboxes' internals laid out in the garage when a pipe for the pool blew and everything became lumps of rust. I guess the pool chemicals work fast.

There is a chlorine plant here as part of a pigment production complex, the metal stair rails look like angel food cake, and security has to drive used trucks, because a new one turns to a pile of rust in two years.
