Default Insulating a garage door

So who has done this and had any luck with the project? I have a 8 foot tall two car garage door. So a little extra height.

I have seen.

Foam foil backed board
foil backed bubble wrap
Spray foam
Fiberglass roll insulation with foil backing

What did you use? How did the finished product look?

Its getting hot in Georgia and the rest of the garage is insulated and it looks like I have one of those portable 12500 btu AC units that you duct out the window. I'm thinking with a little effort at the opening I can keep my shop and work area when I'm out there wrenching a lot more habitable.

So lets see what you have lol.

I have a foam backing on mine. It works, but not well because my walls are not insulated. I'm sure it would do better if the walls were done

The green foam board from Lowes should be fine, comes in several thickness get what fits in the doors panels, cuts easy with razor knife

, they sell foam board adhesive caulk in caulk section , loctite instant grab says foam board on it

Cut tight fit and you can fill the edges with low expanding foam in a can if needed then trim the dry excess foam

That's one method I had kicked around, using spray foam and foam board.

That boars is flexible to a point, the aluminum foil backed can work to its more dense more rigid and a tad heavier since different type foam, I mean if the doors gonna get insane hot to touch then I would go with the higher foam melt rating which is probly that alum backed

If you read packages , things looks the silver bubble wrap require at least 2 layers with air gaps to work properly

I have a roll here it does list for garage door 1 layer but only gives r3.0 and does not say what type of garage door, metal, wood, fiberglass, or insulated

Now I believe the insulated garage door has similar to that yellow foam with the aluminum backer injected into it

Its just a cost to r rating to weight thing, you want the best r rating u can get

You could use the silver bubble wrap on the door then the green foam on top

Reflectixinc.com is on this roll of silver bubble wrap their site might tell u what u need

Mine came with 3/4" foam stuck between the frames. Watch the spray adhesives as it does not remain stuck in moisture climates. Moisture gets between the metal/fiberglass door and the foam just from sweating.

foam board with best R rating for the price.

Ive seen tarps, blankets, insulation with duct tape, plastic, spray foam and card board lol Go with with a light weight foam with good R rating or get a used set and sell yours. Might only pay the cost of what you would for the foam board.

The current door would be costly to replace since it is a 8 foot tall opening. It is a plain aluminium door.

I'll shoot it with infared to see how hot it is getting in the sun.

A few companies appear to sell kits for this but one say for the taller door.

Leaning towards trying the foam
