This all happened back in the '70's. My dad was in Atkinson Morley Hospital for a brain op following a subarachnoid bleed and I used to stop by this resto for a quick burger and chips en route between afternoon visit and evening. The flame grilled burgers and chips were great and the Schlitz washed it down ideally. It wasn't a pleasant time at all due to circumstances and the hospital, due to it's nature, restricted visiting to max 2 hours per day with restriction at their descretion. My dad, now long dead, did survive after the op for around 13 years thanks to the skill of the surgeon involved. My enduring memories of this time were the very clinical hospital environment and the rushed burger and chips with a cold Schlitz beer afterwards.

Interesting the things we remember Offroad. With all that going on you remember a burger place you would stop at and what kind of beer you had.

It is a very strange recollection on my part. It seems to stick in my memory probably as the overall event wasn't at all pleasant and the life and death decisions I had to make at that time were to me earth shattering. I even recollect the surgeons name, Mr Walsh, who explained everything in minute detail and answered my questions as to the risks and percentages, it wasn't looking good back then, survival = 50/50 or maybe 60/40 assuming no complications latterly. How he survived (without going into detail) was a magic or a miracle (if you believe in them) but all vested in the surgeons skill and a large lump of good luck. C'est la vie.
