A fun and simple thing next time you're heading out for a camping trip weigh your Land Rover and post up the results or post a picture like I'm about to and get guesses to see what others think.
Tonight I'll post the weigh slip

I'll have to weigh Victoria (110) next time l have the rack/tent on. Got the engine out at the moment, doing an overall on her. Had an exhaust valve hanging up once in a while, so...out she came. Could have just pulled head...but thought...what the heck...new pistons/bearings and such wouldn't hurt...lol.

l guess...lol. There are those days though, that even l'd like to just drop something off and pick it up fixed. But, l know l'd be deeply disappointed. Can't stand "hack mechanics" and nine times out of ten...that's what you get. I've always prided myself on rebuilding/replacing engines to the point you can't tell the engine was ever in or out. Can't stand broken clips, plug terminal clips destroyed, mismatched bolts, poorly routed hoses or wiring harnesses, etc. Attention to detail is paramount, in my opinion (granted, l'm a bit more slack about my own stuff, but not much).
The other day, was checking out a V8 overhead cam job one of my younger techs was just finishing up...finally...and it was just plan sad. Freaking broken retaining clips everywhere, mismatched bolts, missing bolts, wire harness dangling along serpentine belt, etc.. Worse part is...this was the third time he had it a part. Told him up front to be sure to hold the timing chains taunt, so he doesn't drop a tooth on crank. But, he's a "know-it-all", fresh out of tech school, and just gives me a "look" and says "he knows". Okay then, l'm just an old boomer...what the **** do l know...so...have at it. He starts ripping it a part. Stop by a bit later, notice he never brought the engine to top dead center, to align timing marks on gears/chains...which is something you should do. Puts it back together, well you guessed it...it doesn't run worth a ****. Idles, but no acceleration...kind of like when you're one tooth off...but what do l know...lol. Well, he won't admit it "could be" a tooth off and proceeds to change cam sensors and a couple other do-dads...and he's talking about possibly needing to replace ECM. Tears top-end back a part, removes cams, reassembles...still same problem. Finally, l go back over and say...did you try bringing it up to top dead center and see if cam sensor aligns with tone post? "No, because l know l didn't drop a tooth." Well, by now l'm like...we're checking it...he's been working on it for over a week. We bring up top dead center...and lowandbehold...cam sensor post is about an inch away from sensor. Huh, that's strange...lol. So, now...grill comes off, out comes the rad, front cover comes off, another 8 hundred in parts is applied to the repair bill, and finally...the timing chains and gears are set to spec. We're fleet mechanics, so this was not a job that got passed on to the consumer...but if he was a regular shop mechanic...you can bet your bottom dollar it would have been.
Sorry about the long story...l should have just left it at..l can't stand hack mechanics...lol

Forgot to mention one of the funnier things about this story...
Being the shop supervisor and having three new techs...l normally just watch them do their thing and only offer bits of advice sparingly or when asked. Because, there's only one way to find out what they know...and that's by watching them.
Anyhow, after first assembly, engine idles but no acceleration, and is throwing cam sensor code, no signal. He tells me he needs a sensor, get it, he installs, same issue, then needs sensor plug (since its clip is mangled, go figure...lol), get it, he changes out plug and terminals, no change. And, like l say...l'm just giving them some rein...to see if they can figure it out. Finally, he says ECM is not sending voltage to cam sensor and he needs ECM...l'm like...l don't think so. Go over to the bay and ask them to check cam sensor for me. He gets out a test light, and checks it with engine off/not running...immediately l'm like??? He basically turns key on, sticks probe in cam senor plug and says..."see, no voltage from ECM". I'm like???...but say nothing. He goes on to tell me there should be 12 volts there...l'm like...okay l don't think so, but if you say so...lol. Finally, l say..."there's nothing wrong with that sensor or ECM...and the ECM doesn't supply power to the sensor...the sensor is a magnet and when the tone post spins past the sensor, the movement across the magnet creates an electrical impulse that "it" (the sensor) sends "to" the computer. Said, start it up and check cam sensor with meter...hmmm...seems to be there's a reading now...lol.
Oh, and don't get me started on the fact he didn't pump up new lifters. He started the thing up the first time and l was like???...man that things rattling bad, asked if he pump up new lifters...said, no, they don't do that anymore...l'm like...really, l must have missed that memo...lol.
Yeah know, l don't expect a young tech to know everything, or much for that matter...but at least...don't pretend you know everything when you don't.
