Default Funky Gas Gauge.....

Hi All,

2004 HSE - I replaced the fuel pump and sending unit a couple years ago with an aftermarket (cheaper) unit, and it failed last week. Ordered a Pierburg OEM replacement (pass side pump assembly only) and had it installed at the shop last week.

Since the new install, a "full tank" (~26 gallons) reads at the 3/4 mark on the fuel gauge, and the digital trip odometer shows "324 miles" until empty. Before on a "full" tank when the needle was all the way at full, the trip odometer would show 420 miles until empty. FYI, I have unhooked the battery overnight, I've run a full tank (almost to empty) and filled up, etc. Same deal. Since all this was working fine before the new fuel pump was installed (i.e. the sending unit was showing fine) I don't think it's a problem with the parts. I've read a few posts about odd readings from the gas gauge, but I can't quite pin down what my issue would be, or how to resolve. I do have a code P0463 code, which I see "indicates the voltage signals from the Fuel Level Sensor are irrationally high and indicating the impossible condition of there's more fuel in the tank than the tank can actually hold."

I'm a little lost on this one....any ideas from you fellas?

Thanks,
Steve

I just came up with the same code. Interested if you found a solution. Can’t find a lot of info on it either.

Mine came on weirdly after I installed my lift. Also had the ‘3/4 full’ issue you had for a while, but never the code.

Is it a float ball in a tube or a float on a rod that makes a potentiometer sweep... ? Either way, something is out of whack... either the rod is bent incorrectly or the pot is bad or incorrectly aligned... or wrong for the application.
