Default Timing Chain

My timing chain broke on my 2016 HSE at 60k miles. I am told I need an engine replacement. Has anyone done this and do you have any advice?

I’m interested in hearing what you’ve found as well. Hoping you will respond. 2017 disco sport timing chain went the other day. 60k miles, 1mo outside of warranty.

In case anyone is not aware, LR issued an extended warranty notification earlier in 2022. Here is copy/paste from another post I made :

LR have recently extended the warranty on the timing chain wear issue. The allowance is tapered based on age and mileage. Check out the latest bulletin on the NHTSA web site https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/20...09987-0001.pdf
The issue was originally reported for the VIN numbers listed here: https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/20...04461-9340.pdf I believe this VIN series finishes in 2012, prior to the 2013 model?
Hope this is useful to someone....

Yah I knew that but mine for some reason wasn't included based on VIN. I actually traded my rover in two weeks ago. It was starting to become problematic with issues and I couldn't trust it would get me from a to b. AC compressor was the final straw as it was replaced before I purchased it but it was replaced with an aftermarket unit. The warrant co wanted to replace it with another aftermarket unit. Was going to cost me another $1600 to put an oem unit in.

Between that and the sus warning light coming on randomly I had to make the hard decision.

Ugh. Sorry to hear that. What will you be driving instead?
I'm about to buy a 2013 and I'll see how that goes. Wife loves it and I do too. Hey if I have to get rid of it in a couple or 3 years I guess that'll be too bad. I'm trying to be as pragmatic about it as possible and find the best condition vehicle I can. Fingers crossed

I picked up a gently used 2017 BMW X6.

I have to say, I miss the rover, miss the 5L engine But I also love getting 25mpg and having a useful info center.

With the 2012 models having an updated tensioner applied at the factory halfway through the year, is there any way to look that by VIN? Would that bulletin be a reliable resource for looking at whether a certain 2012 LR4 models fall on either side of that change?

I'm looking at used LR4's, seeing a lot of 2012 that are in my price range and owners not sure about timing chain work so I'd love to be able to look up by VIN if any of them were from later in 2012 and have the updated tensioners straight from the factory.

Timing chain was the item that finally killed my plans to buy a 2013. Despite it's near perfect condition, when the inspection tech put it into diagnostic mode we could clearly hear the tell tale clicking.cost to do the work at my local dealer is $3800 My understanding is this is an issue to a greater or lesser degree with all models. My recommendation if you want to buy one is to consider this a wear item and factor the cost into your purchase as most if not all will need doing if you drive it over 80-100k miles
