Default Bad key, lockout and engine disabled issue

Hey guys, I’m thinking about adding a P38 to the stable. I have a line on a 95 P38 and its got a key, lockout and engine disable issue. Owner says it started with a bad key causing a lockout, then the battery died and forgot the key memory so now it would give an engine disable code. I assume that I would have to get it to a LR dealership and have them get it sorted? What’s the story on this? Is it worth messing with? Anything I should look for regarding the issue?

Other than that issue, the preliminary evaluation of the truck is that it is in good running condition. I’m trying to get my eyes on it in person.

95 was the most trouble plagued year of the p38.

I would not buy a non-running 95 p38 with electrical issues for more than salvage rate

Its going for $500. I do appreciate that input. I’m not well versed on the RR generations. Owner says engine and trans are in “excellent” shape, but you know how that goes..LOL

So am I in for a headache trying to get this key and lockout issue sorted? If I drop it at a dealership can they sort it? $500 plus the cost at the dealership and this might still be a good $$ proposition?

I think it really depends on the shape of the truck. If it’s in good shape, hvac working ok? Air ride still working? If not many other issues and no rust than could be alright

Hate to say it but invest $500 on a 1995 P38 and it will be the MOST EXPENSIVE " $500 " you will ever spend.
Good Luck!

If you decide to take on this project this might be helpful.....

You'll need that Vaseline if you take it to a dealer... They don't even want a P38 to be seen near their "store."

The one thing a dealer is good for is that they can sell the registered owner a new key with proof of ownership and VIN number.

Any indy LR shop should be able to clear the disable code with their software.

LOL! Thanks y’all! Can an indy set up a new key and match it to the truck?

it may be moot as the guy hasn’t got back to me after multiple attempts to reach him.

FWIW I only want this as a bang around vehicle.

Unless you have a good rover specific code reader programmer I wouldn’t get the truck if there’s that much wrong already.
