Default coolant temps

i know. the title makes it look like i should be posting in the D2 section. but hear me out.

i have a new to me 2000 4.6 HSK. the truck runs great. i took a look at the cooling system and it all is in great shape. seems a lot less complicated than the D2's is.

do these trucks have the same reputation for overheating that D2s have? i just can't seem to find people complaining about that particular issue.

is there a 180F thermostat for these trucks? if so, is it needed. i have been monitoring coolant temps and have gotten up to 217F while running the AC at idle in 94F weather.

Thanks,

As far as I know ours has a stock thermostat, It runs between 178 and 188... Of course being Seattle, I haven't driven it in 94 degree heat. My D2 runs hotter in hot weather too. These do have the oil cooler though so that helps compared to the late D2's. Once I saw those temps, I decided to do nothing but monitor the fluids and watch for leaks. It's been great so far.

jastutte, I'm looking forward to reading more about your experience with the new P38. I'm exploring the possibilities as well.

They seem to be like a DII, with better made engines and frames...and some nutty electronics and of course the air bags.

There seems to be as much info out there on these as the D1's and D2's so I figure most anything can be worked out if it acts up.

Every once in a while I throw my scan gauge on the p38 and it seems to always run around 188. No ac working tho.
P38’s are awesome, I keep wanting to mod mine but I don’t need a modded d2 and p38. Lol
