Help Buying 1996 Range Rover
Hi! I'm new to this forum. My neighbor is selling his 1996 Range Rover with 140k miles on it. It runs but I noticed the check engine light and the ABS brake lights are on. He said he just replaced the brakes and exhaust and that it passes inspection, but the inspection expires in two months and I don't think it would pass if the check engine light is on - would it?
I've only ever had Fords and I'm not a car expert by any means so this feels all new.
The price is good, the car aesthetics are great, but how much money is too much for a car with a check engine light on?

You'll have to get the codes read to a good answer... But without knowing what the codes are for a P38 with unknown codes would be worth about $2000.
ABS codes would normally be either a wheel sensor or the WABCO box.
Also look at the climate control head unit, if you see an open book symbol that is also a warning code indicating that system isn't working properly.

$2000 was also the price that I thought. My P38 is possibly my favourite vehicle I’ve ever had, but I’d be hesitant to recommend you buy one if you’re not inclined to do a lot of the maintenance yourself. Depending on where you live it can be difficult to find a mechanic who is familiar enough with them to troubleshoot and maintain them for a reasonable cost.
