Hi there I have a 2011 RR Sport TDV6 and I had a fault code come up “check charge rate” checked charge rate and wasn’t charging (12.4v) anyway I changed the alternator out.
drove it for few hours and then the code flashed up again and stayed on for about 2 min then went out.
i got home and checked it with the light out and it was charging. Drove around again and it came up once again I pulled up and checked and with that light on saying check charge rate it isn’t charging but it goes out after a few minutes.
now I had the car running in the drive way sitting still and watching the voltage and it would charge then stop charging and bring the fault light on and then go out.
so not sure if alternator is faulty or if I have another problem.
can anyone tell me what controls the alternator to charge?
i tested the wire that goes from positive battery terminal to the battery monitor on negative terminal and it has continuity so it should be good.
the alternator only has the power supply (red wire) and then a single wire connector on alternator.
so what I want to know is what do I check now or what controls alternator to turn on and off. Is there a clutch on it as I spun old alternator up and it spun the i stopped the Lully and the inside kept spinning so assuming it is like a clutch setup ??
If it's like the petrol version there is a fuse and relay in the charging system. If the relay is failing it could be cycling in and out.
Owners manual should have the location of the relay
Anyone know where or if the TDV6 has this relay? I’ve searched hard for a wiring diagram and can’t find the exact one for my car as 2010 seems different it shows 3wires out back of alternator and mine only has the single wire.
What brand alternator? I've had many issues with brands other than Denso/Genuine
Its a brand called JAS I phoned them and they said they have only ever had one other one faulty before and it’s not a common one they have drama with as he looked on the list of vehicles they have listed that just doesn’t work with and the RRS is not one of them.
i check the wiring from the connector on alternator to the ecu behind the battery and it has continuity while wriggling the harness so looks fine from there
