Apparently, the driveshaft broke and impaled the transmission and somehow took out the cat as well. It would cost about 3X as much as I paid for the truck to fix it. Since I have never found myself in this position before, I am wondering if anybody can suggest the best approach for getting closure. Besides the trans, shaft and cat, the rest is all good (engine, suspension (lifted), tires, most interior, etc.). Not sure if I should part it out or just donate it and carry on as best as I can. Anybody interested in a terminally ill Disco? She's located in Chantilly, VA.

 

I just repaired an 03 D2 that went thru the same thing for a friend. I got a used transmission and TC out of an 04 and slapped it in. Both cost me 400.00 and the D2 is up and running again after sitting for 3 years due to the explosion caused by the driveshaft. If you really love it, you can source out a transmission and TC fairly easy.

 

Will Tillery is out in your neck of the woods and probably has the used bits you need to save it for a fair price on hand.

Sorry to hear about your bad luck with the ROVER. I hope you can get it sorted out or sold for a decent price.

Or for a more positive reason (warning), to show others what happens when the drive shaft meets transmission.

 

I didn't take any pics of the 03 I worked on and I should have because it was BAD! One of the worse drive shaft explosions I've ever seen.

 

Worth about $500 in one piece, probably about $1000-1500 in pieces.

 

Actually, I just posted on Expedition Portal a (strong) running Disco 1 with a 4.6l with 40,000 miles. I was going to swap the engine, tranny, & transfer case into my RRC. That plan is killed as I was rear-ended & the RRC was totaled. Wife wants it for a wheeler (ie dog-park) rig of her own. Save me. I am asking $1500 due to the low mileage on the engine. It’s tagged & I don’t want to part out. Lemme know...
