custom bumper building

Just built a new bumper for my discovery 1. I do metal work for a living. Just wondering if anyone would like a bumper built? i have all the resources to build almost any bumper you could want. I can build a bumper, front or rear, for around 300-600 bucks plus shipping.

Either pm me here or you can shoot me a text at 6783166227 if you would like to send me what you want and i can work you up a price.

thanks
robert

Post some pics. You've got some steep competition with Hard Labor Creek being in Athens(I think).

honda50r 08-22-2013 11:54 AM

Lets see some examples

robertmirwin 08-22-2013 12:15 PM

my avatar is a bumper i built last week. i can build one like in my avatar for under 300 bucks

honda50r 08-22-2013 12:21 PM

Can you post a bigger pic?

bumper looks straight but it actually angles back at the headlights

Fordtech 08-22-2013 01:56 PM

That's pretty sweet for under $300, I just need a rover to put one on.

robertmirwin 08-22-2013 02:41 PM

i can build one for about anything!!! by your screen name i would say you drive a ford

ZGPhoto 08-22-2013 02:45 PM

Could you do a winch bumper that was level with the headlights, rather than a few inches below them?

robertmirwin 08-22-2013 02:57 PM

yeah thats not a problem at all. just going to be a bit wider and that means its going to be a bit heavier. whatever you want i can build!

dusty1 08-22-2013 04:53 PM

good looking work. do you have a photo from the side/profile?

robertmirwin 08-26-2013 09:22 AM

heres a side profile pic

We-go-up 08-26-2013 09:39 PM

i like it, how hard would it be to bring the edges in toward the headlights, so that it stays the same width from center of grill to edge of fenders. I can draw something up if needed. Im looking for something very low profile. something stronger then the stock bumper, but nothing massive like most that are out there.

Yes.
I suggest the OP take a look at the offerings from RTE, Tactical Rovers, and Hard Labor Creek. Clean up your designs some. You're building bumpers for Land Rovers not Jeep Cherokees after all. ;-)

robertmirwin 08-27-2013 10:11 AM

if you guys send me a drawing of what you are looking for i can build it. I built mine the way it is because that's how i wanted it. I can build whatever. Sure you can get one from RTE or tactical rovers but its also gonna cost over at least 900 plus shipping. I can build from scrap metal at work so your not going to have that overhead cost and i do this not because im trying to get rich but i enjoy working with metal. Trying to give some guys some options instead of having to dish out that 900 plus bill.

if you even send me a bumper that tactical rovers or whomever has that you want i can do a close copy

thanks guys!!!!! put me to work!!!!!

this I applaud you for. I will put something together on paper and use your skills, I would rather pay someone who enjoys it, then a company that sells it for an over priced amount. most bumpers made today are not worth what they sell them for.can you fine tune the dimensions? i can send a rough drawing.

NCguy 08-27-2013 06:27 PM

First off, my front rear and rock rails came from Hard Labor Creek Fab. Denny is a small shop that does this for a living because he loves it also. Do not include him in other manufactures over priced products, as you call it. Denny has a lifetime warranty on his work and I can bet you that his bumpers can withstand more punishment than almost anything out there. I personally have put them thru Hell and Back. It is not just the look and thickness that counts on a bumper. Besides the shape and look there is also things to consider like what type of weld was used, where are the weld positions, upon and impact how is it distributed thru the bumper and the engineering that goes into this is not just a quick process. Can a home built bumper still utilize airbags, I think not.

I am all for do it yourselfers, since I have done a lot myself and if I could weld would probably tried to build myself one and I commend you on your work. I am not degrading your work and to be honest it seems as if you have a very good talent.

I just do not agree with comparing two items if they are not of same quality/design.

Just my 2 cents.

That's funny because EVERY SINGLE Rover bumper made today(with the exception of TerraFirma maybe) is from a small company. I would guess not one of them has more than 10 employees, and that's probably even too high.
Yes, some of the bumpers are pricey but you have to look at what you're getting. The build quality is VERY good. Laser cut parts, HD recovery points, extremely stout, winch mount, and they fit very well. All that comes at a price. The only company that that sold "discount bumpers" was Bottorf. You can Google that and read all about that disaster.

The fact is the Rover market is small and the demand just isn't there for these companies to be able to mass produce them and keep the cost down.

Everybody wants a deal and I'm no different. But to say these "big"(actually quite small) companies are overpricing their bumpers simply isn't accurate or fair. The fact is a person, whether it's Robertmirwin or Bill @RTE, can't charge $300 for a bumper and keep their doors open as a full time business.

Robertmirwin, I know you said you can custom build anything but here's some things I notice.
-the top of the bumper should sit flush or very close to it with the bottom of the trim. There's no reason for it not to and it makes the bumper look 1000 times better.
-most Rover guys aren't fans of the steeply raked stinger bar
-most guys will want recovery points AND a winch mount, not one or the other

Good luck and please know my criticism is meant to be constructive. :D

Im not going to waste my breath and start an argument over something that doesn't need to be argued over. NCguy and FishEh are missing the point. There is a member willing to donate his services and help save people money. as well as give them a chance to have a custom bumper. There's not a lot of tech that goes into building one. Its not rocket science. I've been off-roading for about 18 years now. not in just land rovers, but chevys toyotas and even a jeep. A lot of fab work has come from a guy in his garage. so back to the point. build away friend I'm getting info together for you to build me a bumper.

thats my 2 cents...

I wasn't trying to start an argument or insult you or Robert. I just don't think your representation of Rover bumper companies is accurate. And while making a bumper isn't rocket science, it takes a fair amount of work to make one that is built well and looks good. Doing that for under $500 is a very tall order in my opinion.

I wish everybody involved good luck!!! :D

robertmirwin 08-28-2013 10:07 AM

Hey guys!!!! i am not trying to start a monopoly on bumper building for land rovers and i understand that a 1200 dollar bumper has a spot for a winch and tow points. Thats why i put a receiver in. i have a winch mounted on a receiver. If you want tow points i will fill the bumper with tow points and you can pull from anywhere. you want a bumper with TWO winches on it i can build it. rock sliders no problem rear bumper lets do it. you want an exo roll cage all i need is your truck for a week.

Again i am doing this because i enjoy it. drink a few beers and build a bumper that will explode a deer, kangaroo, or zombie. thats a good time to me. its the same as anything, to transmission guy rebuilding a transmission takes a day and its easy. I try to do it and the truck wont move and i wasted a week. I know metal fab. i can build a pretty sweet bumper to almost anything you want and it only takes a few evenings after work.

Send me drawings or a picture and i can start building for anything, land rover , jeep, chevy or whatever

ZGPhoto 08-28-2013 11:05 AM

How much a bumper with 12 recovery points on it?

:)

robertmirwin 08-28-2013 11:17 AM

How about we just weld a crane clevis on the front then you can a 500 pound hook on the front

:D

dusty1 08-28-2013 11:32 AM

have you played around with any other armor? diff guards? steering guards?
I have done a couple of diff guards, they look like s***.

drowssap 08-28-2013 12:50 PM

rock sliders how much $, I might take a chance on you.

robertmirwin 08-28-2013 02:17 PM

gonna depend on what you want. do you want something that is tight fitting like a tactical rover slider or one that is a little more square and comes out past the door some. rough guess i would say between 150-250 bucks plus shipping. just send me a pic of what you have in mind

robertmirwin 08-28-2013 02:20 PM

and to dusty1. is it for a d1 or d2. If its for a d1 i can fab up something not bad looking and stout using my truck for mock up.

dusty1 08-28-2013 02:27 PM

shucks, its d2 and there is a difference.

robertmirwin 08-28-2013 03:24 PM

what are you looking for? i can possibly get a d2 for a few days if i need one

dusty1 08-28-2013 03:35 PM

for sure wanting diff guards with access to plugs. (don't care if I have to weld'em on or bolt'em) I tried to make my own, it looked like a beat up football helmet.:o so I left them naked.
also wanted to do a front skid/steering guard. not at all needed, because I have HD steering components. But I like the look. been playing around with some mock ups, but not sure yet on the mounting brackets or the angle.

robertmirwin 08-28-2013 03:46 PM

let me do some mock up and drawings and i will try to shoot you something. we will start with the diff guards.

dusty1 08-28-2013 03:48 PM

awsome.:D thanks

robertmirwin 08-28-2013 03:51 PM

did some looking can make one very similar to the terrafirma diff guard. lets say between 80-150 bucks plus powder coating. regular primer and paint is no extra charge it will be included in the price.

CUpgt 08-28-2013 03:58 PM

I applaud you for this. I have a local buddy that is a fabricator on the side. He builds race buggy chassis, drag car chassis, helicopter logging stuff, helicopter repair platforms, bumpers, and is even getting into decorative metal work. He built my first bumper, panhard bar, and is going to be cranking and plating my radius arms. And best of all he is local and I don't have to have anything shipped!

robertmirwin 08-28-2013 04:10 PM

thanks CUpgt, its fun for me and i can help out some guys that cant buy that 1500 dollar bumper cause i sure cant

141starlifter 08-28-2013 06:41 PM

I have an 04 d2 and I would be interested in a front bumper.

141starlifter 08-28-2013 06:48 PM

I will text you tomorrow
