Who are you looking at for shipping? I've shipped wheels and tires with FedEx before and it was MUCH less than that. You don't really even have to box them, just wrap them real good in plastic shrink-wrap (like Saran Wrap). Also, you can use Greyhound to ship them freight for a pretty reasonable price, you'll just have to go to the terminal nearest you to pick them up.
