4x4 question?
ok, i know this is not strictly rover related but i need an intellegent answer here.
i was teaching a guy how to drive our militayr humvees the other day and while i was explainging the whole 4x4 thing he asked me what HL setting was on the transfer case shifter. the options are HL/H/N/L i know what H/N/L are for and explained them to him but was unable to think of what HL is for - i know it is high-lock - and in what situation one would need to use it...
i understand that the all-time 4 wheel drive on our humvess is related to the system in our rovers but im still stimied by HL.
right now i gotta look like an idiot to this guy and would really like to be able to give him an intellegent answer to his question and maybe redeem a few of the guy points i lost for not knowing.
thanks

So what is your actual question?
When to use high locked?
If so...you would use it to drive at highway speeds on loose surfaces, like snow or sand.
You will be driving in a pretty straight line, no tight corners but still need maximum traction.
I use mine when driving in blizzards or sand covered trails.
Does that help?

As far as I know there is no low unlocked on the Humvee. As soon as you shift to low the center differential is locked. I could be wrong but that is my understanding of what an Army mechanic friend once told me.
I think I can answer this once and for all, just give me a couple of days.
I have a cousin who is a light wheel mechanic in the Army, he is currently in Iraq.
Let me try and get a hold of him.
