Default Range Rover vs. discovery

Gents,

Question here...I was doing a little wheeling with my father last weekend. He has a 1995 Range Rover county classic and I have a 1999 discovery II. We approached about a 45 degree climb (rough estimate) that was slippery and muddy. We both have newer BFG KM2 and he was able to muscle his way up it no problem and I had to lock my differential to get up it (easy as cake after diff locked) what's the reason this could be? We're both curious. Also, the D2 has a 4" lift and the RR has a 2" lift. Ideas?

The Borg warner case is "locked" when it's is in low gear.

You might want to look into your loft, no one makes a 4" lift kit for a D2.
Also, to prevent wearing out your brake sooner then you want, keep you CDL locked for any trail or section that requires more traction and save burning out your pads which is also less effective when traction is needed.

The rear suspension setup is better on RRC too. The tires are more likely to stay in contact with the ground. But most was probably the transfer case.

There's also the issue of driver skill.

The RRC is simply a better vehicle

Just wanted to follow up with everyone, I contacted the previous owner of my D2 it has the 2" terra firma lift and the reason it was lacking off road was the shocks in the back were stock and completely shot...no rebound and didn't allow for any flex. I replaced them with the terra firma +2 shocks and it made a world of difference! However the RRC is still a beast!

Air down tires, larger footprint better traction

Just for a little reassurance if the last owner had originally told you it was lifted 4" it could be from a 1/2" sag on stock suspension. So if he did a 2" lift plus 32" tires that would be 3.5" on top of stock position (so 4" from its old sagged position). Bet you love it more with those new shocks on there
