Question Mystery Hole in 1966 109 Series IIA Gear Box

Hello,

I apologize up front for not having a picture. I'm looking at purchasing an unrestored, running 1966 Seires IIA. When I went to see it I discovered a 1 inch square hole cut in the bottom of what I believe is the gear box case. It was intentionally cut using some kind of a tool. Can anyone offer what this hole might have been cut for? Thanks!

I’m guessing, but maybe for a power take off?

I'm now being told it is the bell housing and the hole is simply missing a cover. The odd part is that the hole is clearly (albeit poorly) machined which makes me think it was done aftermarket.

Your first Series LR? Wait until you find out about machined parts that are supposed to retain fluids.

They aren’t supposed to retain fluids. They are designed to leak in order to replenish the earth’s supply of fossil fuel for future generations.
