Default winter tire advice

So i just ordered a new set of 16 inch alloy wheels and i was hoping to get some clarity on what winter tire to get for them.

I am currently running les schawb open country all terrain and i am sliding way too much going down snow covered hills with barley tapping the brakes.

Some threads on the forum recommend a size 245/75/R16. however les scwab and tire rack recommend 255/65-16 or 225/75/16?

My winter driving involves going over mountain passes on highways in nor cal and southern oregon with some ventures to ski areas and forest service roads.

any advice is very much appreciated!

Thank you!

I tried a Terra Grappler years ago and it was moderate, at best on snow-packed roads. Then I went with dedicated Bridgestone Blizzaks and they were a world better. This winter, I'm using Goodyear Duratracs for a better deep snow capability.

Overall, the Blizzaks were much better on snow-packed roads but the Duratracs crawl through deep snow better.

Pick your weapon based on your conditions.

I just had Blizzaks installed yesterday but not sure with the performance yet but i read a lot of good reviews about them. I got duratrac in my other disco but its almost worn and noisy already. Drove over 80k miles with them. But for sure if you go winter tires, you will end up getting something for spring. I want to try the winter tires and got them for 200, immaculate condition. Guy bought it but wont fit his mustang.

Thabjs! I was looking at the blizzaks - does size (245/255/265) matter much here?

The best way to figure out since you have a 16" wheels is go to tirerack again and read the specs. If your tuck is not lifted, the most you can go is 30" without rubbing. The original is 29" tire. So then you can figure wether you need thicker than 55 tires like 60, 65 to 75. The size you mentioned is how wide it will be

Nokian Hakkaplattas are a really good snow tire. Don't run them in hot temps or it will kill the compound. That's what I use, and I'm Canadian. Blizzaks are probably better suited to more sporty of vehicles, that's what I used on my Bimmer wagon. Another good tire, although I don't drive them much on the highway, just on site, are the BFG KO2s, they seem to do a good job on our site roads.

I just had Yoko Icegaurds mounted. I went with the Yoko's as I plan on using them year round and wanted a snow tire that also performed well in all conditions.

255/55R-18 Yokohama iceGUARD iG51v XL

Of course I am running 18's so I can't answer the question on the size, however, I will say I am very impressed so far.
