All the other brands use a paper style or metal gasket which always end up leaking before the pump itself fails. So I use Dirko on them.

The AC Delco has a one piece design (others are 2 piece) and uses a rubber o ring as well as a metal gasket with rubber overmolding at the openings.

 

Just looked at mine. I have purchased a Genuine a few years back and included gasket is indeed metal.Which Dirko do you use? red or gray ?

Is the water pump on the LR3 something that can easily be inspected or do a bunch of parts have to come off for access?

Just recently had this done on my 2009 LR3 at a local service shop.

1. Remove replace water pump total $586. Labor $180. Pump $334. Coolant $72.

2. Remove replace water crossover assy with thermostat total $682. Labor $273. Assy $250. Manifold gasket $76. Coolant $82.

So you are saving yourself close to $500 in labor, at the expense of your Memorial Day. I don't know what brand of water pump was used. Hope it goes well.

My goodness, you need to find another shop. Those prices are staggering. Did they change out the coolant both times? How long between incidents. Most of the parts have arrived. I need to do an inventory tonight. One problem with ordering from Amazon, each part comes from a different vendor. You have to keep track of what has arrived. Given the price savings, it should be worth it. Phil

I know, I know. But it must be less than the dealer cost (I tell myself). Actually the crossover was replaced first, and then six months later the water pump, and so yes, replaced coolant both times.

I've had this LR3 since 2012, bought it used at 59K miles. Now at 165K miles. My spreadsheet shows an average repair cost running at $207 per month. For comparison, my much smarter wife bought a new 2010 Volvo XC60 now at 170K miles. Her average repair cost is at $125 per month.

 

Yes, but she has to drive a Volvo, you are driving a Land Rover! We bought the LR3 about 4 years ago at 80,000 miles, we are now at 133,000 miles. As I recall, we paid $8,800 and it came with a full set of rotors and pads. The previous owner had done the control arms. HSE with the HD and Cold Weather Package. When we bought it I knew that it had a leaking transmission sleeve and it needed a new suspension compressor. I had a local shop do the transmission service and sleeve, about $700. I picked up a compressor from a dismantler for $100. Other than regular oil services, that is about all that we have had to do. (not including a coolant leak and a sunroof drain leak) I am sure that there are some other items, the cracked dash is a constant irritation and the clear coat is shot on the hood and on the top. It is headed to the paint shop shortly. It has been a really great vehicle. Phil
