Default 07 LR3 grinding, seems to be braking while trying to accelerate

We just purchased a 2007 LR3 SE a few months ago. We’ve had a suspension fault message since the beginning, stemming from a bad ride height sensor that is in the process of being replaced, along with recalibration. This doesn’t cause us any issues except for lowering overnight, compressor raises it right up once it’s started up. We have had the control arms and all inspected, with no issues reported. The problem that is puzzling us, is that on occasion (0-2 times a week), we have loud bumping when turning sharp right into or out of the driveway/a parking spot. It happens very rarely. Today, after experiencing the bumping, it was followed by loud grinding sounds and the car essentially braking while I was trying to accelerate slowly. I waited and tried again, still happened, waited again and the car was fine. Any ideas on what to look at? Our indie shop couldn’t recreate it.

Would like to add- no warning lights, loss of power, or anything to indicate which system was affected. Brake pedal was hard, but I was able to stop the car.

Figure out which wheel is dragging (check for heat) then on that wheel check the caliper slide bolts. They can freeze up and cause a brake stuck on issue

We’ve actually narrowed it down to the HDC kicking on for whatever reason. We’re on flat surface, going less than 10 mph, and the button has not been pushed, nor has the light on the dash come on. After a minute or so, the HDC fault/special programs off message appears, and it no longer does it. Trying to figure out how that would happen, hoping the suspension issue may be triggering it? All guesses, from
new LR3 owners.

It’s the exact sound as described as when using the HDC system.. along with a stiff brake pedal. Very odd.

Wheel speed sensor? LR3s seem to be finicky with voltage and water/corrosion in wiring.

It’s possible. We have a reverse light out, so we’ve ordered that along with a brake switch light to see if that may be old and worn. If that doesn’t work, we’ll start checking sensors.

steering angle calibration or wheel speed sensor calibration, something you could DIY with a GAP tool or a mechanic could do

Had a similar issue to yours on tight freeway cloverleafs, HDC would kick on and the stability control light would flicker on and off, stopped after doing calibration on one of those things.

We have narrowed it down, will try to calibrate them both (waiting for GAP tool to arrive). Ours only happens at beginning of drive, and have found that turning the steering wheel to the left initiates the HDC fault/special programs off, thus avoiding the HDC response altogether. Hoping the recalibration does the trick. We replaced the reverse light and the brake light switch, which did not fix the issue (but hey! Now they’re new!) thank you!

Did this end up being HDC related? Among the simpler reasons, this could manifest with a seized caliper, a bad hydraulic hose, or driving the vehicle while in access mode.
