Default Lost Ignition Keys - Not original ignition lock

Good afternoon everybody... So between the wife and I we managed to lose both of out ignition keys to our 1998 LRD. I know that it is not the original ignition lock that came with the vehicle. The dealer wants 420 plus parts to re-key, my local locksmith wants 350 to do the job.

Does anybody have any suggestions (aside from not being a dummy and losing both in the 1st place). How difficult is the job of putting in a new ignition/key mechanism? Im mechanically inclined and can do brakes, a/c compressors, water pumps, bearings, ball joints etc etc etc. but I know some jobs like this can require specialty tools or precision work. Any advice appreciated.

Would a junk yard part suffice if I can do the job on my own? Do I have to replace the entire mechanism or just the tumbler?

Thanks guys and gals. I appreciate it!

I'm guessing they are just re-keying the cylinder.... because you don't even want to know how much the entire ignition lock is...

Ask Lincoln or Paul....they might have a used assembly for you, with a key....

You just wont have the same key for the doors and fuel lid....or you can have them all re-keyed..

Call Paul Grtant and buy a used ignition switch and key combo as well as a few key blanks. He has blanks cheaply. Buy at least three blanks, make extras and put one away for next time. That is the cheapest way out.

Of course you could always go the much cheaper route and do this...

...if you remove the pins altogether, then the keys you have for the door will work. As long as you're locking your doors, there is relatively little risk that someone will steal the truck. (If they know enough to defeat the door locks without breaking a window, then your ignition isn't going to slow them down much either...)
